ACTION RESEARCH PROPOSAL

CRAFTING AND FRAMING

“Tell me and I’ll forget;

Show me and I may remember;
Involve me and I’ll understand”

is a Chinese Proverbs that can truly testify my journey in surviving this subject. The goal is, not
just to pass a fully furnish research paper but rather making everyone in the group be involved
in every step of the way. Research is no new to me despite of its negative colloquialism- which
gives so much stressed to students, time-pressured and many more. And now, writing with at
ease, I couldn’t believe that this project would give me so much satisfaction not just with the
research itself but also with the people I am working with.

FIGHTING FOR OUR FIRST LOVE: Our humble experiences

Upon assigning a Research Proposal which would be done by pair, delightedness filled my heart
knowing that Therese Alessandra Flores will be my partner in accomplishing this project. Aside
from being my Mcdo buddy, Therese and I have the same craft for writing. We are both computer
literate and have the same first love -- the JOURNALISM which I think the perfect recipe in
succeeding this proposal.

To be honest, at first, we are so overwhelmed with our broad topic and a wide range of ideas
that resulted in the number of times we got rejected by our teacher with our topic. On our last
try, we decided to make it simpler and more feasible. Realizing that “What can we really do?.”
We asked ourselves on how canwe use our talents as an instrument of helping others. And there
a Research Proposal entitled “FACTORS AFFECTING POOR PERFORMANCE OF BARANGAY
SCHOOLS IN CAMPUS JOURNALISM” sprouted because of the love for journalism.

Due to the tight schedules and high demands of our academic life, we have no choice but to
double time. Here comes now the real challenge- the construction of manuscripts. Special thanks
to HiveNet working space, who witnessed on how we cram and struggle on putting our ideas into
words.

There are moments like, “nakapoy don ko mag-ubra”, “wait lang 5 minutes matulog ko anay”,
“wala don ga andar utok ko.” For 3 nights, we tend to fight the temptations our bed who are
inviting us to sleep. Every time we’re almost lost on track, we always go back to our purpose and
reason why we are doing this in the first place- not just because of the grades nor the research
proposal but to our first love.

THE ILLUMINATION

Fast forward to fulfilling-moments when we finally passed our seven pages Research Proposal
anchored with visionary love and passion. After this we also received some remarks from our
subject Teacher. Her comments really helped us to identify which areas should we improve.

Aside from the jam-packed experiences with Therese, a lot of learnings embraced me throughout
this journey and I am so proud to share my sentiments with you:
Turn your passion into advocacy.

Research is more than just an inquiry of knowledge. It is also an opportunity to learn about
yourself and to the world around you.

Simple actions can be a good cause also.

View research lightly. Being stressed is part of it and one way to develop your critical and
analytical skills.

Enjoy while working under pressure. Research will really test your patience but when it feels like
giving up, just always go back to your reason, to your first love.
THE MOTH
BEYOND THE LIMELIGHT: My JOURNey throughout the years

In an open and spacious room, all eyes are on me. That time, I have nothing but only a white
piece of paper, a trembling knees, and a timid heart. From the moment I step in front of the
class, the spotlight began to reign. From the moment I speak, everyone is so attentive. And from
the moment I finished sharing, I feel nothing but total freedom and emancipation from all my
fears and doubts.

As a person, I barely share my flaws and down stories. My winning and spotlight moments are
the ones who mostly publicize unknowingly that I have backstage stories to tell also. Being a
contesera, failure is part of it. My mom would always tell me that everything is under control.
Accepting failures may be hard but it teaches you to become better and braver. And luckily, we
have a The Moth, a storytelling presentation. It became a venue of expressing ourselves which
is free from judgments and an arena of vast experiences and emotions.

THE NERVE-WRACKING EXPERIENCES

Last November 8, 2019, the comets and galaxies destined our group to be the “Star” of that day.
Being the first group to perform, we keep on asking our fate because indeed we had little
confidence to face the crowd due to a limited amount of preparation. But still, we have no choice
but to take the center stage and own the spotlight.

My mindset at that time is to present my story well in a convincing manner so that my

classmates would give their full attention throughout my performance. I am so
grateful that despite of my group’s hesitation, God never failed to shower us with
wisdom and poured out a cup of confidence and grace.

Indeed, my and our presentation runs smoothly and we are indeed pleased to receive
constructive comments and things to improve regarding our performances.
Moreover, positive remarks inspire us more to do more in this project.

THE TALE OF TRIUMPHS AND VICTORIES

The total silence during my storytelling and the resounding applause after my presentation
coming from my classmates were enough reasons to be happy. Nothing can beat
a crowd cheering and congratulating you after the performance. It seems like I
won in a contest.

Secondly, the story of success is not measured based on my performance alone to my other
members as well. As their leader, I couldn’t be prouder to hear their sentiments.
Because of their stories, I learned to appreciate them even more.

Lastly, “It’s hard to inspire others when you are not inspired” is a mantra that truly manifests
the importance of putting your heart in everything you do. My Moth experience
made me appreciate my failures as a student journalist. I know I’m still in a
process and I will never get tired enduring this process for I know God
constantly mold me for a more secure future.
REACHING AND EXTENDING: The Lakbay Batang Journo sailing story

THE PROCESS of creating and lessons you have learned

Scripts are ready, pens are flipping, audios are recording,

and cameras are rolling.
Everyone is on set.
Every second are detailed.
Every take has a story to tell.
This is Lakbay Batang Journo, its first try and first story.

IN THE MAKING

Telling and convincing your story for just a span of 3 minutes is an arduous thing. As a scriptwriter,
I would prefer to write a lengthy script just to express the whole thought of the
story. After a few hours of deliberating a concept, at last, we created a feasible
vision.

Strenuous brainstorming and conceptualization is not a joke. After numerous debates and
throwing of ideas, finally, Lakbay Batang Journo germinated. Lakbay Batang
Journo sprouted because we wanted to keep in touch with the children. We wanted
to show help by extending our talents to them. We were once like them that’s why
geared with passion and determination, our aspirations turned into reality.

Before we conduct our activity, we make sure that every detail should be consulted from our
instructors. We utilized our vacant and after school hours just to plan again and
again. There, I really appreciate how collaborative efforts is one of the key in
attaining the success of your group. Luckily, we received enough support and
enlightenment from Mrs. Shiela Mae Quero for constructing our script and activity
design; and the guidance and expertise of Mr. Mil Joe Cabag in the making of our
video.

IT’S LAKBAY TIME.

We started our November 15 as early as 6 am. I was shocked that everyone is already at the
meeting place before the call time except me. By 6:30 am, we reached the Ceres
Terminal. And there, the long trip began. An hour later, we are almost bound
between the Province of Iloilo and Capiz, when my mom texted me that there is a
high possibility that the Local Government would declare a suspension of classes
any time of the day due to the Signal no. 1 typhoon. From that time moment, I
keep on praying we can still pursue our goal for that day.

Around 8:30 am with light rainfall, we reached our place, the Municipality of Dumalag. Excitement
filled the eyes and heart of my groupmates as they explore the new place. We
rested for a while, eat some breakfast, and rehearse for the afternoon’s event.
Around 10:30, we adventured the hilly roads going to Sta. Teresa Elementary
School.
When we got there, we are so overwhelmed with the hospitality of the teachers and students.
We are catered. We are accommodated. We spent the remaining hours before
lunchtime on recording and taking some shots for our digital storytelling. We began
the workshop around 1 pm.

The program started from a short icebreaker, followed by a prayer by Gladwyn Gustilo.
Afterwhich, we introduce ourselves and the College of Communication to the
students. Our first topic is about the Basic News Writing by Claire Tanguan and
Gladwyn Gustilo, followed by a short workshop. Around 3 pm, the students have
their snacks while entertained by Ann Estimado though a song number.
Afterwhich, we moved on to our next topic which is the Radio Broadcasting and
proper reading. It ended by 3:45 and the remaining 15 minutes was used for their
activity about delivering of news.
From four o’clock until 4:15 was giving of awards and certificate to the school for its valuable
support to us and to our college in conducting this activity. And by 4:30 pm, we
gladly bid goodbye to the students of Sta. Teresa Elementary School.

And you know what’s the best thing that happened? There was no suspension of classes declared
on that day. Indeed, God works miraculously.

THE SUPPORTIVE FAM

Being the host member for this project, my concerns were also my family’s concern. I would like
to take credit for them for being so, so supportive since Day 1 of Lakbay Batang
Journo. Aside from cleaning and organizing my room, displaying my picture on our
sala and buying a new air freshener in our CR (HAHAHA) on the day when my
groupmates visited our house; they also make sure that my group mates are in
their utmost comfort.

I am so grateful to have Papa who cooked mouth savoring lunch for us and driving and instant
tour guiding to my groupmates; to my Mama who helped me process the letter
and permits, provided us all our need in school during the conduct of the activity;
and to my Aunt Winnie who sponsored an ice cream after a long, tiring day.

Indeed, my success will always be their success too. And I couldn’t ask for more!

THE EXEMPLARS.

The entire journey brought me so much learnings and realizations in life. And here are the
following:

 Your advocacy-even how big or small it is, could make an impact on someone or to the
community.
 Behind a stressed-free leader, is a great group members! Swear! Shout out to
#TeamParirong.
 Every big opportunity comes from little things.
 There’s nothing more satisfying than volunteering and extending help to others.
 Commit your plans and everything you do into the Lord. We may have plans but He has
better plans.
Lakbay Batang Journo doesn’t end here. In God’s perfect timing it will continue its Lakbay stories
in helping the student journalist, who will be the voice of the near future.
