i) Find E(X), E(Y) and E(XY)
ii) Test whether the random variables X and Y are independent or not.
b) Find the moment generating function of the random variable with the probability law [10]
( = )= , = 1,2.........and also find the mean.

4. a) If the life X (in years) of a certain type of car has a Weibull distribution with the parameter [10]
  2 , find the value of the parameter  , given that probability that the life of car exceeds 5
years is e-0.25. For these values of  &  , find the mean and variance of X.

b) The mileage which car owners get with certain kind of radial tire is a random variable having [10]
an exponential distribution with mean 4000 km. Find the probabilities that one of these tires
will last (i) atleast 2,000 km (ii) atmost 3000 km.
5. a) A sample of 900 members has a mean of 3.4 and S.D 2.61 and the sample from a large [10]
population of mean 3.25 and S.D 2.61. If the population in normal and its mean is unknown.
Find 95% confidence limits of mean?
b) In a random sample of 400 students of the University of Teaching Department, it was found [10]
that 300 students failed in the examination. In another sample of 500 students of the affiliated
colleges, the number of failures in the same examination was found to be 300. Find out
whether the proportion of failures in the university teaching departments significantly greater
than the proportion of failures in the university teaching departments and affiliated colleges
taken together.
6. a) One thousand students in a college were graded according to their I.Q and the economic [10]

conditions of their homes. Use  -test to find out whether there is any association between
economic conditions at home and I.Q of students.
I.Q
Economic High low Total

Rich 100 300 400
Poor 350 250 600
Total 450 550 1000
b) The following table shows the life of the light bulbs (in thousands) of three different brands [10]
investigated by a company in order to find out if the mean life of the three brands of light
bulbs is the same.
Brands

these three brands is the same.

hours. (ii) What is the MTTR?
