E. DISCUSSION

Transitive verb takes its name from the fact that its
action goes “across” from the verb to a receiver of the
action. The receiver of the action is called an object. It
can take 2 kinds of object the Direct object (DO) and
Indirect object (IO).

Direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the

action of the sentences. It answers the questions
“whom” or “what”.
For example:
 Arthur drinks coffee.
- arthur drinks what?
- he drinks coffee
-coffee is the direct object

The formula is:

Subject + action verb+ what? Or whom?
= what? Or whom? Is the direct object

 Jan hit the ball.

-jan (subject) + hit (action verb) + the ball (what or
whom)
= ball is the direct object
Point out the subject, action verb, and the direct object.
 Max drinking cold coffee.
- Max the subject
- drinking the action verb
Yes because it answer the question, “what Max
- cold coffee is the direct object
drinking?”

 Jason picked Manny.

States the question what or whom? And then the direct
object. -Jason picked whom?
- Manny is direct object

-Jason is the subject

And now used the formula. -picked is the action verb
- Manny is direct object
Absolutely! Well done!

Now lets discuss the indirect object.

Indirect object is a noun phrase referring to someone

that is affected by the action verb typically as a
recipient.
It is a noun or pronoun to whom/ what or for
whom/what an action is completed.
The indirect object receives the direct object of the
sentence.
For example:

 Stan built Julie a house.

- Stan built what?
- a house is the direct object

- Stan built a house for whom?

-Julie is the indirect object

 Dan made her a cake.

- Dan made what?
- a cake is the direct object

- to whom did the Dan make the cake?

- her is the indirect object
 Martin read Maria the book.
- Martin read what?
April, get first the direct object.
- the book is the direct object.
-to whom Martin read the book?
Rhea point out the indirect object. - to Maria is the indirect object

 John threw Steve the ball.

-the ball is the direct object
-Steve is the indirect object
What is it that John threw?
Who received the ball?
