Oral Topics for Level 16

1. Animal:

a. Do you think animals are intelligent? Explain.

Intelligence as for the capacity to discern in complex situation the best solution no but I
believe they are capable of learning from patterns, through trial and error, receiving
rewards and some studies have said that animals, in special those who serve as pets like
dogs they can read facial cues and understand basic emotions like happiness, anger and
sadness

b. What do you think about people who treat animals like people?

I think I’m not one of those, but I respect what they do, those kinds of people they really
care about their pets and in some cases the love that we can receive from an animal is
sincere and genuine

c. Do you think it’s cruel to hunt wild animals for sports? What about keeping them in
zoos?

It is, we already do so much harm by killing animals that we eat at daily basis, killing them
for fun is so much worse than that, but talking about zoos that depends on the quality of
their keeping, the world as it is a dangerous place for any animal, at least in a good zoo
they can get food and medical care, on the other hand a bad administered zoo is just
worse than a prison since those animal didn’t do anything to be jailed

d. What are some endangered animals? Why are they at risk?

I have read that some of the most endangered animals are

the western lowland gorilla that some diseases and illegal hunting are wiping out this poor
creature

The Chinese giant salamander is being eaten by humans and their specie is near to
extinction

The vaquita, a marine rare animal from Mexico

Amur leopard one of the rarest cat only 40 left in Russia`s far east

And many others that have been threaten by climate change like polar bears

Human have speeded up important changes in this world we have caused many
extinctions and the creation of many new species that have adapted to survive the
change.
2.Decisions:

We use different verb forms to talk about our plans for the future – depending on
what kind of plan it is.

will

We use will to talk about plans decided at the moment of speaking.

 I forgot to phone my mum. I’ll do it after dinner. He decides to phone his mum
when she is speaking – she didn’t have a plan.
 I can’t decide what to wear tonight. I know. I’ll wear my black dress.
 There’s no milk in the fridge. I’ll buy some when I go to the shops.

going to

We use going to to talk about plans decided before the moment of speaking.

 I’m going to phone my mum after dinner. I told her I’d call at 8 o’clock. He
decided to phone his mum before he speaks – he already had a plan.
 I’m going to wear my black dress tonight. I need to pick it up from the cleaners.
 I know there’s no milk. I’m going to get some. It’s on my shopping list.

present continuous

We can also use the present continuous to talk about future plans. We usually
use it when the plan is an ‘arrangement’ – more than one person is involved and
we know the time and place.

 I’m meeting Jane at 8 o’clock on Saturday.

 We’re having a party next Saturday. Would you like to come?
 Are you doing anything interesting this weekend? We often use the present
continuous to ask about people’s future plans.

a. What was the last important decision you made?

b. When you have to make big decisions, what do you normally do?
c. Have you ever regretted a decision you have made?
d. Do you trust your intuition, or do you rely more on your reason? Explain.

3. Teenagers:

a. Why are teenagers so eager to experience new and exciting things? Is it good or not?
Explain.
Studies have shown that teenagers can put up with more uncertainty than adults and
that’s one of the main reasons that they can engage in risky behavior so easily in spite of
knowing the possible outcome, they have more energy at their disposal and not so many
fears from past events that make them think things through, weather is good or not that’s
matter of perspective and that’s how life is, of course it would be better if teenagers listen
carefully to their parent but the fact is sometimes even their parents don’t know all the
answers they need

b. Why is peer approval important for teenagers? What consequences can it bring?
We are social creatures and one of the main ways we have to ensure if what we are doing
is the right thing is to receive feedback from our friends, of course that is not always a
good thing since if we get tangled with bad people they can abuse from this and make us
made bad choices that we will regret later

c. Have you ever done anything due to peer pressure?

There was a time when I was a kid that my friends asked me to join them in a rock-
throwing fight and they threaten me with not being my friend if I didnt join them, that day
I threw a rock and made an injury in a kid that I knew and I felt really bad for it, I went to
apologies to him after that .

4. Weather:

a. What kind of weather do you like? What kind of weather is your least favorite?
I rather when its cloudy with low humidity and windy, its fresh and fun to be outside and
don’t get sunburns since my skin is pretty sensible

I don’t like really sunny days for that matter and even worse when the humidity is so high
that even though there is no sun you feel like dying from the heat .

b. Have you ever experienced a storm or anything similar? Tell the group about it.
Most of the storm that I remember are from when I was a child some huge storms that
made my house leak water like crazy, it was a mess the day before and we had to help our
mom to clean everything.

c. Do you remember any major storm? What do you remember about it? What
happened?
It was when I was twelve I remember I was sleeping in my aunts house when there was
this huge storm so strong that electricity failed and we had to wait till the next morning to
use a bucket to get water out of our house, my mom was really really scared

d. Would you live in a country with the tendency to have such events? Explain.
That depends on the quality of the house if it can withstand the weather and electricity is
not as prone to fail like in this country I could, but I rather cloudy, dry and windy places
like I said.
5. Sports and athletes:

a. Do you prefer to practice sports or to watch them? Why? Explain.

I don’t enjoy much watching sports I rather practice them, but I certainly prefer those
which are not about competitivity between teams, I like rock climbing, swimming, running
and weight lifting, since I was a kid I wasn’t into soccer and baseball at all

b. Do athletes make good role models? Give examples to support your answer.
They are an excellent example of making a living from something you really enjoy and
that’s a huge value from a good role model, perhaps some of them receive too much
attention but they are the 1% that excel in their categories

c. Is there too much violence in professional sports? Give examples to support your
answer.
Violence would ever be something that people enjoy watching, is highly emotional and
those things drive people crazy about it, it’s a matter of making shows that people invest
on, yeah, I think there is too much violence in certain sports, perhaps that’s one of the
reasons why they don’t call out my attention
Boxing have made some people kill each other and get serious injuries from it
Karate and others martial arts have too.

d. Should kids be required to take PE in school?

Perhaps they do, nowdays kids don’t do as much sports as they did in the past, so at least
making it somewhat mandatory in schools can give them the chance to try it out, but I
don’t think it should be ranked in grades like other subjects like math and history.

6.Sayings:

a. Discuss the following sayings. Do you understand them? Do you agree with them?
Which of them do you like and why?
 No pain, no gain.

It’s the classic saying that remarks some harsh truth about life, valuable things come with a price
and sometimes they need sacrifices, effort and time

 You’ve got what it takes.

It refers to having the skill-set to engage in a specific task that needs previous knowledge to
complete it.

 It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.

Its about honesty, giving the best of yourself in any situation whether you win or lose give 100%
on it

 Practice makes perfect.

None of us comes to this world knowing everything practice do make the difference and spending
time allow us to master anything that we put our mind at.

 There’s no I in team.
It about teamwork and not letting you undermine your team`s ideas, perhaps you feel like you are
more capable than the rest but if it really is a task that need a team to make it through ideas must
be shared within the team

 If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

Failure is just a sign to keep trying, everything in life is based on chances, the more you try, the
more likely there is for you to succeed, of course learning from your previous mistakes.

 Run your own race.

This is my least favorite, its about engaging in your own life and problems not taking into
account the life of others, everybody is fighting a battle as we speak, make sure you don’t
lose yours, that’s what it means
