Assignment 5
1 A manufacturing firm produces three machine parts A, B and C. The profit from selling part A
is Birr 60 per unit and from selling part B is Birr 100 per unit and from selling part C is Birr 80
per unit. The firm employs Laths, Milling Machines and Grinding Machines to produce the parts.
The machine time needed to produce each part and the total minutes available per week are
shown below. The firm would like to maximize its profit and would like to know how many
parts of A, B and C should be produced per week.

1 What is the objective function?

2 What are the variables?
3 What are the constraints?
4 Do you need to define the range of the variables? Why?

Type of Machine Machine time Machine time Machine time Maximum time
(min) for Part A (min) for Part (min) for Part C (min) available
B
Lathes 10 5 9 4800
Milling Machines 4 9 6 2400
Grinding Machines 2 2 1 480

a) Determine the number of units of parts A, B and C to be manufactured per week to maximize
the profit.
b) Suppose due to market reasons sales of Part C is limited to 300 units per week will the
optimization result differ? Why?
Explain your final result of the optimization.

Answer
 What is the objective function?
The objective function is to maximizing the total profit
 What are the variables?
The variables are machine parts which is machine part A, machine part B and machine
part C
 What are the constraints?
The constraints are the maximum time (min) available by the type machine which is lithe
machine, milling machine and grinding machines
 Do you need to define the range of the variables? Why?
Yes, for question b It needs to define the range of variable because variable c (machine c)
because it should be less than or equal to 300. But for question a no need of variable definition.

As we have seen from our calculation is the main purpose was to optimize the cost. to maximize
the product the machine milling and grinding they uses all the allowed time per week totally or
the time available and usable are equal in machine milling and grinding but machine Lathes
didn’t used up all the allowed time for production or this machine used below the allowed value .
We can conclude that also the production maximization is achieved without using machine part
B.
