Assignment No.

2 (Course STA301)
Fall 2010 (Total Marks 30)
Deadline
Your Assignment must be uploaded/ submitted before or on

23:59 29th November, 2010

(STUDENTS ARE STRICTLY DIRECTED TO SUBMIT THEIR

ASSIGNMENT BEFORE OR BY DUE DATE. NO ASSIGNMNENT AFTER DUE
DATE WILL BE ACCEPTED VIA E.MAIL).
Rules for Marking
It should be clear that your Assignment will not get any credit IF:
• The Assignment submitted, via email, after due date.
• The submitted Assignment is not found as MS Word document file.
• There will be unnecessary, extra or irrelevant material.
• The Statistical notations/symbols are not well-written i.e., without
using MathType software.
• The Assignment will be copied from handouts, internet or from any
other student’s file. Copied material (from handouts, any book or by
any website) will be awarded ZERO MARKS. It is PLAGIARISM and
an Academic Crime.
• The medium of the course is English. Assignment in Urdu or Roman
languages will not be accepted.
• Assignment means Comprehensive yet precise accurate details
about the given topic quoting different sources
(books/articles/websites etc.). Do not rely only on handouts. You can
take data/information from different authentic sources (like books,
magazines, website etc) BUT express/organize all the collected
material in YOUR OWN WORDS. Only then you will get good marks.

Objective(s) of this Assignment:

• The assignment is being uploaded to strengthen the students’

concepts about skweness and kurtosis.

• The assignment is uploaded to depict the role of moments to

describe the distributions.

• This will strengthen the concepts about the simple linear regression
and its applications.
Assignment No.2 (Lessons 12 to 18)
Question 1 2 × 5=10Marks
a) On which basis Chebychev’s inequality and empirical rules are dissimilar?
Both these rules assist us in having a certain idea regarding amount of data lying
between the mean minus a certain number of standard deviation and mean plus that
same number of standard deviation the two points between which the bulk of our data
lies. If our data set is hump shaped we obtain this idea through the empirical rules and
if don’t have any reason to believe that our data set is hump shaped then we obtain
this idea through the Chebychev’s Rules.

b) Why we calculate measure of skewness and kurtosis?

In skewness we check the values equidistant from the mean have equal
frequencies is defined to be symmetrical and any departure from symmetry and in
kurtosis we check the degree of peakedness or flatness of a uni-modal frequency
curve.

c) For what purpose simple linear equation is used? Also explain the drawback of
the simple linear equation.
Simple linear equation is the study of relationships among variables, a principal
purpose of which is to predict, or estimate the value of one variable from known or
assumed values of other variables related to it.

d) Differentiate between an experiment and a random experiment.

The random experiment can be repeated, practically or theoretically, any number
of times. It always has two or more possible outcomes and an experiment that has
only one possible outcome is not a random experiment.
e) In deterministic experiment, can we apply probability theory? Explain.
Question 2 3+2+5=10Marks
a) Suggest the skewness of the data from the following information.
i. X m = 55, X 0 = 25, Q2 = 39
ii. Q2 = 0.023, Q1 = 0.011, Q3 = 0.033

b) For a certain data:

Mean = 62.83, Median = 61.5
And Standard Deviation = 8.516
Find mode and Pearson’s coefficient of skewness
c) Find the first four moments about mean from the following data.
X= 14, 20, 22, 34, 30, 18, 26, 28, 16, 25

Question 1 8+2+=10Marks
a) For following data calculate
i. simple linear equation Y on X
ii. simple linear equation X on Y
iii. From the slops calculated in above cases, calculate coefficient of correlation.
Hight=X 5.6 5.2 5.5 6.0 6.1 5.0 5.4 5.2 5.3 5.6 5.1
Weight=Y 67 65 66 75 69 62 64 68 65 65 62
b) How many different words can be formed from the word ‘BLOGOSPHERE’?

If any one have some problem and want to take help than call me my contact
