Vapor Pressure of Liquid (Pre-Lab)

ABSTRACT:
The experiment is designed to determine the latent heat of vaporization of any pure
substance. This can be done by using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The equation
features a few constants which may be found out by measuring the vapor pressure of the
liquid at various temperatures.

INTRODUCTION:
At any given temperature, the vapor and the liquid phases of a pure solution come in
equilibrium with each other. At this point, the relation between the vapor pressure of the
liquid and the temperature of the liquid can be found out by using the Clausius-Clapeyron
equation. This equation relates the vapor pressure and the temperature with the chemical
potential of the liquid. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation is

Integration of this differential would give us a lot of different equations which correlate
the pressure with temperature of the liquids. One such example can be the Antoine’s

equation. Here, the value of is taken to be a constant. The integrated equation with
a few modifications gives us the Antoine’s equation.

This knowledge of the latent heat of vaporization and the pressure versus temperature
curve for a pure liquid comes in handy when we design a chemical industry. We can
safely tell the maximum amount of heat that could be provided to a stream such that its
pressure does not exceeds the maximum pressure the walls of the container can
withstand. Also, we can minimize heat losses by providing excessive heat/energy to a
stream when we know the exact amount of heat needed to obtain a certain pressure-
temperature system.
