ABSTRACT

The study was focused on Facebook as a platform for expression of emotional distress on

adolescents. The study used mixed method to analyze and collect information. Through purposive

sampling, adolescent participants (N=20) were given a valid and reliable questionnaire to measure

an individual’s level of satisfaction in expressing and perceiving that she/he is experiencing

emotional struggles by using Facebook and interviewed with semi-structured interview guide. The

data gathered in quantitative part was analyzed through descriptive statistics and the data gathered

in qualitative part was analyzed through thematic analysis.

In total, the participant’s level of satisfaction is moderate. This indicates that the

participants are experiencing a médiocre degree of subjective satisfaction in using social media as

a means of expressing their emotional distress. The qualitative data results show in general, that

the participants strongly enjoy coping and expressing their sentiments in Facebook about their

mental distress and it was supported by presenting the broad explanation on what they post, the

frequency of their posts, how do they come to know about their emotional distress and what they

feel before and after they express it on Facebook. Findings of this study give advantageous insights

about the growing number of adolescents who use Facebook as a platform of expressing their

perceived emotional distress and participants experienced satisfaction and other positive emotions

when expressing oneself in Social Media.
