Decantation and Filtration


DECANTATION – the process of removing liquid from a
mixture but leaving solid substance untouched at the bottom.

MATERIALS
 Water
 Sand
 Beaker
 Chemical spatula

PROCEDURE
1. Mix the water and a sand in a beaker using chemical
spatula.
2. Allow the sand settle down at the bottom.
3. Slowly decant the water and leave the large particle of the
sand.

FILTRATION – the process of filtering small fine substance from a


liquid mixture by using filter paper.

MATERIALS
 Water  Iron stand with ring
 Sand  Filter paper
 Beaker  Wash bottle
 Funnel  Chemical spatula

PROCEDURE
1. Fold the filter paper into quarters.
2. Put it in the funnel.
3. Slowly pour the mixture, filling halfway of the
filter paper.
4. Wait for the filtered water or liquid to flow in
the funnel.
5. Wait for the water to settle at the beaker.
