GREEN CONCRETE: A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE

INTRODUCTION
Much research in recent years has focused on the use of "Green Concrete", due to its mechanical
properties as well as its economic and eco-friendly benefits. "Green Concrete" is an
environmentally friendly concrete produced by using recycled materials. It has many uses in
construction areas and has also been investigated as a potential replacement of normal concrete.
However, this concrete has been found to be too weak under impact to be produced or used in
constructions.

Many studies have been done to improve the properties of this concrete. For example, the
International Research Journal of Engineering and Technology -IRJET (2007) produced "Green
Concrete" using industrial waste as recycled materials and silica fume. They focused on
identifying the ideal design of this concrete by preparing different doses of materials and
performing tests to compare their mechanical properties. However, although the effect of the use
of recycled materials and the application of silica fume decreases the global pollution and the
cost, little attention has been paid to its use because the compressive strength does not improve
compared to a conventional concrete.

The purpose of this study is to develop a set of criteria for the dosage of the materials to improve
the resistance of concrete. On the basis of these criteria it then describes the preparation of the
concrete using different dosages. The mechanical properties of this concrete will be better and
will be more sustainable for the environment.
