HOLY WEEK IN POPAYAN

Holy Week in Popayán is a religious celebration in the city of Popayán, Colombia,

of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The commemoration
includes solemn and massive processions that have been taking place
continuously since the 16th century, from the night of Dolores Friday to that of Holy
Saturday.

In these processions, wooden images carved by the art schools of Seville,

Granada, Andalusia, Quito, Italy, France and Popayán are present. More countries
should be invited for these activities. The effigies on walkways or furniture with
special attachments, such as wooden platforms, bars of typical materials such as
wood that allow representing the different episodes narrated in the Gospels,
related to the passion, Crucifixion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, should
be implemented. In addition, each representation that is called "passage" and is
carried on the shoulders of the so-called freighters through the streets should be
involved. The organizer as the mayor should link a route drawn in the shape of a
Latin cross since the time of the conquest, around 2 Km that includes the main
churches and temples of the city center. These parades should be held between
8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Holy Saturday.

The Holy Week processions of Popayán were inscribed on the representative list of
the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in September 2009 and
declared cultural heritage of the nation through Law 891 of 2004. For these
activities they should wear sweaters, hats, gloves since it is cold weather. E Mayor
of the city had to declare these days as civic in this city.
