FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTION

1. PURPOSE

1.1. To maintain the appropriate level of fire protection provided by portable fire
extinguishers.

2. REFERENCES

2.1. NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers

2.2. 29 CFR 1910, Subpart L (OSHA)

3. ENCLOSURES

3.1. Facility Fire Extinguishers Location Drawings

3.2. Inspection Checklist

4. RESPONSIBILITIES

4.1. (Client Company)’s Safety Coordinator is responsible for performance of this

procedure.

4.2. (Appropriate person) is responsible for reporting any damaged or missing fire
extinguishers to the Safety Coordinator.

5. PROCEDURE

5.1. Refer to the diagram of fire extinguisher location attached to this document.
The location and condition of each extinguisher shown on the drawing will be
determined. If any fire extinguishers are found in a location not shown on the
drawing, or extinguishers are missing, contact the Safety Coordinator.

5.2. For each fire extinguisher, perform the following inspection steps:

5.2.1. Ensure that the area around the extinguisher is clear, the extinguisher is
visible, and signs are provided to mark the location.

5.2.2. Examine the extinguisher and determine that the use instructions are
legible and facing outward.

5.2.3. Determine that seals and tamper devices on the pin or handle are in place.
If any are missing, obtain replacements from the Safety Coordinator and
install them.

5.2.4. Perform the following inspections. If unacceptable results are determined,

remove the extinguisher and deliver to the Safety Coordinator for a
replacement.

5.2.4.1. Examine the extinguisher for physical damage, dents, corrosion,

cracked or plugged hoses, leakage, or missing parts.

5.2.4.2. Determine that the pressure gauge indicates in the green range or
slightly over. Pressures indicated less than in the green range are
unacceptable.

5.2.4.3. Lift extinguisher off the bracket to determine if the extinguisher is

full. A 10-pound dry chemical extinguisher should weigh over 16
pounds. Any extinguisher significantly lighter than the others is
unacceptable.

5.3. Note that the annual inspection is current for the extinguisher. If the annual
inspection is out of date (the annual inspection tag is more than one year old),
schedule this extinguisher for the required inspections.

5.4. Complete the Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspection sheet (included with this
document) for each extinguisher.

5.5. Once all inspections are performed for the individual fire extinguisher, sign and
date the inspection card on the extinguisher. Repeat this process for all facility
extinguishers.

6. RECORDS

6.1. Retain inspection records for 1 year.
