Phenomenology Study : Experience of Ostomate with Stoma Pouch Attached after


Surgery

Background: Becoming Ostomate requires an adaption on the surrounding environment and changing
condition. Living with pouch will be a stressor for the ostomate. This research aims to obtain the
ostomate experience with after surgery.

Methods: It is a qualitative research with phenomenological approach with a total of 6 participants who
were assisted by Borneo NCI Center private nursing care for ostomy care. The research was conducted
in May 2018.

Results: This research obtains 4 themes, namely: (1) Ostomate condition who used stoma pouch within
a year will feel better compare to shortly after surgery; (2) motivation of the closest person and self-
confidence affect the Ostomate psychology to be able to socialize; (3) there is a limit in the Ostomate
partner sexual activity: (4) Ostomate condition increases the worship.

Conclusion: Ostomate needs a support from the surrounding people and environment. Despite the
sexual activity cannot be fulfilled, the worship activities will be better. It is recommended to the family
and the environment of the Ostomate to be a good support system for Ostomate to obtain a better
quality of life.
