Title of Chosen Research: The Impact of WhatsApp on EFL students' Vocabulary

Learning
Authors: Elias Bensalem
Publication Date: March 2018
ISI, DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.24093/awej/vol9no1.2 / ISSN 2229-9327

Their study is about The Impact of WhatsApp on EFL students'

Vocabulary Learning that addresses the problems in acquiring new vocabulary. They
found the solution to the problem through an application called WhatsApp which is
commonly use application in the year 2017, with an average of 1.2 billion active users
every month. The said application is used for free texting and calls as well as content
sharing, namely: audio, video, images, location, and contacts. Furthermore, this is
available on different mobile platforms including Android, Apple, and Blackberry. Their
study is conducted within a sample size of 40 Arab EFL learners. They found out that
WhatsApp has significantly improved learners’ vocabulary learning compared to the
traditional technique. This means that WhatsApp can be an alternative way to teach
vocabulary and it is important because the teacher can give his/her assignments related
to increasing vocabulary of the learners outside the classroom.

Research Gaps addressed by the study: This study aims to help the teachers upon
inputting new vocabulary to the learners in the easiest way as possible. Comparing the
recommendation given in the study with other likely researches, this has feasible
recommendation to cater the learners need for enhancing their vocabulary knowledge.

Possible Utilization of Findings: The teacher can use WhatsApp in increasing the
knowledge in vocabulary of the students. The teacher can implement the schedule of
using WhatsApp by having at least 2 times a week during night. They can send, lets say
5 words in the group and the students will find the meaning of it. Then, the students will
make his/her own sentence using the specific word. They will send the answer through
WhatsApp also. Through this, the students will be able to expose to different words that
they can use in their writing and comprehending a text. After giving those words, the
teacher can discuss the meaning and how to use it in a sentence inside the classroom.
Aside from increasing the vocabulary of the students, WhatsApp can be used by the
teacher in sending videos, photos and lectures related to subject matter. The students
will be motivated to do their assignments because there is new way of sending their
assignments.

School administrators can suggest or implement this kind of blended learning in

their institution so that the learners can be able to learn in a different manner.

Target beneficiary/locale/population: The target beneficiary are the English

Teachers.
