Activity 9
Making Improvised Optical Device
Option 2: The Periscope
Task:
 Construct a periscope and trace the incident and reflected rays
Materials
 2 plane mirror
 Illustration board/cardboard
 Cutting mat
 Glue/sticky tape
 Cutter, scissors, foot, ruler, clear lamp
What we did to solve the problem?
 We gathered informations from different resources on how to make an
improvised periscope. First we draw a blueprint of a periscope, then we stick it to
a cardboard. Next we cut through the lines. Then we used tape to stick the
periscope together. Lastly we stick the one mirror into each side 45° facing each
other.
What concepts our group considered in the construction of the device?
 We considered on using 2 plane mirror, cardboard, tape and glue on constructing
this device and using the information we gathered on constructing the device.
What our group found out?
 In the periscope, light hits the top mirror at 45° and reflects away at the same
angle. The light then bounces down to the bottom mirror. When that reflected
light hits the second mirror it is reflected again at 45°, right into your eye.
What our group recommends to improve the design/model built?
 If your planning to make a periscope, you should use pvc pipe or ply wood for it
to be tougher. Also the bigger the mirror are the more you will see.
