CHAPTER 1: BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction
Throughout the decade, the use of technology has significantly improved. In fact,

there are many technologies invented to help us in our daily lives such as to

communicate one person to another, and it aids us to ease our studies/works.

Therefore, most of the people rely on their lives in technology. One of the most used

technology is the mobile phones. A mobile phone is a device used to communicate,

streaming of social media, to get limitless information and a lot of other functions.

In 2003, DepED released Order No.83 which reiterates the Department’s

previous Orders such as DO. 26, s.2000 and DO.70, s.1999 both of which impose a ban

on the use of cellular phones by students during class hours. The prohibition applies to

elementary and secondary schools nationwide whether public or private. The ban’s aim

was to help students remain focused on their studies and that learning distractions will

be minimized. There are two salient points stated in DepEd Order No.83, s.2003: The

Department of Education (DepED) strictly imposes a ban on the use of cellphones by

the students during class hours; and Teachers and parents should devise ways to

educate students on the responsible use of cell phones to prevent them from engaging

in misguided and immoral activities. In 2009, six years after DO No.83, s.2003 has been

released, then DepED Assistant Secretary Teresita Inciong said that they understand

the importance of cellular phones in our daily activities, but rules should still be set on

how students use them especially inside the school or classroom premises.

However, with the fast-changing technology, it often changing the lives of the

people to make things easier and better. People every day seek to make their lives
Page 2 | Primary Reasons Why Grade 12 HUMSS Students at TNHS are Chained to Mobile Phones

simpler, live more efficiently, and in turn get more out of the day. Such emerging

technologies have helped us make things easier on us in everyday life. Mobile phones

are one of the technologies that makes our lives easier and better. Mobile phones' basic

function is to allow people to talk to another person while almost anywhere. They can

place and receive calls and messages by simply pressing a person's name in their

contact list, eliminating the need for memorization or a separate address book. The

ability of mobile phones to connect to people in other countries helps family and friends

who are from far from one another stay in touch. Mobile phone applications extend the

functionality of mobile phones. Word and spreadsheet processors are available, and

those who may need on-the-go computing may find this a great benefit of mobile

phones. Standard mobile phone applications include alarm clocks, calculators and

converters, all of which may help your productivity.

Apparently, mobile phones are essential to students thus it provides updated

features that may help the students in learning and education. There are lots of

application that may help the students in their researching, gathering information and

discovering new things. With mobile data and wireless internet, students have access to

storage full of information that is both safe and unsafe to students. The school may

create guardrails for students using the school internet but when they use their mobile

data, they have the access to things that you would not even want to hear about. As

much as DepEd is updating the education system of the country, it might also want to

consider updating some outdated policies like the one on mobile devices. With the

internet and the learning landscape becoming more digital, equipment and material
Page 3 | Primary Reasons Why Grade 12 HUMSS Students at TNHS are Chained to Mobile Phones

should be updated too. The updated rule on mobile devices must be one that protects

the student at the same time enhance their learning.

Consequently, this paper seeks more information on the reasons why students

are chained to mobile phones and the reason of the students why they bring their

phones at school. Moreover, determining the impact of mobile phones in the daily lives

of the students. This paper also seeks to gather information about the pros and cons of

bringing mobile phones at school.

In order to answer these questions, this study aimed to determine the primary

reason why student of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences at Taguig National

High School are chained to mobile phones. In this, status of time management is

investigated as well as the levels of motivation and anxiety of the students. Lastly, this

study aimed to determine if there is a relationship between the time management, levels

of motivation and anxiety that may affect the reason why students are chained to mobile

phones.

Social Sciences students at Taguig National High School are chained to mobile phones.

Theoretical Framework

Here is a guide that will help to explain and elaborate the primary reasons why

students are chained to mobile phones. The researcher will be going to use two

important theories:

Constructivism Theory by John Dewey

The Constructivism theory emphasizes that the learners working within

their mind individually in order to build their own knowledge, which explains that,

the knowledge is not transmitted to them in a way or another. The most

significant change that constructivism theory adapts is the integration of

technology in the education setting. In fact, research has proven the

effectiveness of using constructivism theory on the integration of technology in

education. Indeed, constructivism theory has been able to use technology to

serve constructivism principles theory. From these constructivism methods, the

learner works on construct and build their own knowledge on (his/her) prior

knowledge using mobile learning technology.

Multimedia Learning Theory by Richard Mayer

Multimedia learning refers to the use of visual and auditory teaching

materials that may include video, cellphone, and other information technology.

Moreover, Multimedia Learning Theory focuses on the principles that determine

Page 9 | Primary Reasons Why Grade 12 HUMSS Students at TNHS are Chained to Mobile Phones

the effective use of multimedia in learning, with emphasis on using both the

visual and auditory channels for information processing. In general, this theory

highlights that using multimedia devices such as cellphone to learn is effective

because give instructors the ability to stimulate both the visual and auditory

channels of the learner, resulting in better progress.
