There are several outstanding reasons for Baker's leadership in downhole flow control equipment, (1), Selectivity means the abilty to lo: cateatlow control device at virtually any point in a tubing string regard less of the number of seating loca- tions passed through while running in . (2) Lock variations for the versatlity needed to seat any type of flow control device at any seating loca tion or at any point in the tubing 1D. () Modular design means that, even in the field, many specifically-tailored products canbe put together from a minimum number of stocked modules. Seating Nipples: The basic seating nipple inthe flow con- tvol systems the fullbore seating nipple. FLOW CONTROL This type of profieis also usedin sliding sleeves, therefore the same topno-go or selective locks can be used with both sliding sleeves and seating nipples. The restricted bottom no-go seating nipples use only bottom no-go type locks Top No-Go Base: ‘Theno-gobaseisaneniarged OD onthe flow control equipment andis positioned above the packing assembly. The top ‘no-go base locates on a shoulder on top of the seal bore of the seating nipple profile, Bottom No-Go Base: Bottom no-go base is a reduced ID posi- tioned below the seal bore ofthe seating nipple profile. A shoulder below the packing assembly of the wireline equip- ment locates on this bottom no-gobase. Selective No locating shoulder or no-go base ex- ists on the flow control equipment. This ‘equiprnentis to be run only in top no-go type seating nipple profiles. Without a locating shoulder to prevent the down- ward movementofthe low controlequip: ment through a top no-go profile, the equipment maybe run through any num ber of nipple profiles. The retractable and reliable dogs permit the accurate positioning and reliable locking of the flow control equipment in the desired seating nipple profil. Modular Design: Except fora few highly specialized prod- ucts, Baker Flow Control equipment is designed to seat in sliding sleeves or seating nipples which can be described ‘as consisting of two basic modules: The lock module that holds the product in place and the flow control module. The interchangeabilty ofthe two basic com- ponents, plus adapters in some cases, means that, even in the feld, many spe- cifically-tailored products can be put 10- gether easily and quickly from a mini- mum number of stocked modules. And, because it cuts down on the number of complete products stocked, Baker Fiow Control equipmentis economical as well as versatile. FLOW CONTROL FLOW CONTROL PRODUCTS IN THE PRODUCTION STRING ‘A well-designed and implemented well completion program can help insure optimum production, mini- mize equipment repairs, reduce rig downtime, and extend the life of the well. Baker's extensive line of Flow Control products help do all these and more. The strategic placement of Baker Flow Control productsin the production string adds a high degree of versatility to the completion string, To illustrate, we have se- lected a representative single-string, mutile-zone completion hook-up and prepared an explanation of each tools vatied roles relative to its position in the string. Wireline Entry Guide ‘A Wireline Entry Guide, when used, is always located at the lower-most position in the produc- tion string. Its lower end has an internal bevel that allows wireline tools that have exited the end of the ‘tubing string to be pulled back up without hanging, w. @ Bottom No-Go Seating Nipple The Bottom No-Go Seating Nipple is generally looatednear oratthe bottom of production tubing string, and often, just below a perforated spacer tube (or perforated pup joint). By the nature ofits design, this nipple con- tains the smallest restriction (its bottom no-go diameter) in the tubing string. Since the wireline tools used farther up the string ae larger than this ripple'sno-godiameter,itservesasa ‘catcher’ for tools inadvertently dropped downhole. In conjunction with the downhole instrument hanger, (see page 21), the Bottom No-Go Seating ‘Nipples very usefulin landing geophysical instru- ments forrecording reservoir data. The perforated spacer tube located above the nipple permits production fuids to flow unrestrictedly around the geophysical device while the spacer tube below the nipple protects the delicate instruments from damage. @ Stecive Seating Nese —@ Blast Joint @ Folens Nexis © Flow covsteg —@ Sing Stove © Fw Couping © Turing Owconnoet Sub {@ Flow coupiog “op No-Go or Slectve Sea © figs “2 © Fiow Cousing @ eotior No-Ge Seating Nipple © vireine Ent Guide Flow Coupling Flow Couplings are used in the tub- ingstring ofaflowing wel. conjunc- tion with seating nipples and sliding sleeves, to protect them from abra- sive action caused by turbulent flow through restricted areas. As a gen- eral rule, a flow coupling should al- ways be used when the flow control device is installed on a permanent basis, i.¢., on a safety valve. The flow coupling, while normally tun immediately above a seating nipple or a sliding sleeve, may be run both above and below the restricted flow area. Flow couplings are made of heavy wall tubing with the OD and 11D similar in size to the tubing cou- plingsbeing used. They are available from 3 to 10 ft lengths, adequately covering the areas most generally affected. Refer to page 84 for Baker Flow Coupling. © Top No-Go or Selective Seating Nipple ‘The Top No-Go or Selective Seating Nipple is usually installed just below a hydraulically actuated packer and above a pressure sub (if used). Its function here isto act as an alternate pressure setting device for the hy- draulc packer. in the event he pres- sure sub is rendered inoperable, a wireline blanking plugor checkvalve, capable of holding pump pressure from above, can be installed and Used to set the packer. These same tools may also be used to pressure the tubing for leak detection or to isolate the lower zone for circulation or treatment of the zone above it By seating plugs that contain pressures frombelow, the lower zone can be isolated while producing an upper zone, This seating nipple may also be sed to seat various types of chokes for regulating fuid/gas flow rates and pressures. FLOW CONTROL Tubing Disconnect Sub The Disconnect Sub is designed to provide a secondary of backup land- ing nipple profile in the tubing string when a lower plug is impossible to retrieve. The tool is installed in the tubing string 6 to 10 ft above the seating nipple and provides the op- tion of separating the lower tubing by means of wireline work or by cutting the tubing. Alter separation, the tub ing string is left with a sub having a top no-go seating nipple profile @Sliding Sleeve The Sliding Sleeve is installed in the lower portion of the production tubing string as close to the top ofthe packer ‘as possible so that it can service the etirezone. Inthisinstance, thestiding sleeve is the only tubing to-annulus ‘communication pointbetweentwoseal bore packers. While in the closed po- sition, it acts as a straighthru flow path for fluids being produced from below oF for fuids being injected from above, ‘With the slicing sleeveinthe open position ful tubing-o-annulus commu nication is established. This communi cation is useful in many operations: + Fluids pumped down the tubing and through the sliding sleeve's ports may be used for treating and stimulating or to Kill the well by ‘overbalancing formation pressure. + Circulation can be conducted thru the sliding sieeve to clean up the area, just above the packer, of sand and sediments while running or retrieving the seals or to displace fluids duting completion ‘operations. + Thezonemay beselectvely tested or produced through the sliding sleeve's ports. + By landing commingling chokes in the siding sleeve's topno-go seat- ing nipple profile, production may occur simultaneously through the tubing fromalower zone as well as {rom the zone where the sleeve is located —without back flow into the formation. + Reservoir data may be recorded by installing geophysical instru: ments using the sliding sleeve's ripple profile. + By landing the appropriate blank- ing plugin the sleeve's nipple pro- file, the tubing strings may be pres- sure tested to the surface or the lower zones may be shut in. @ Top No-Go or Selective Seating Nipple, Polished Nippple and Blast Joint Toreduce rig downtime andasubse- quent loss of production caused by eroded joints, a non-ported seating nipple and apolished nippleareotten unin conjunction with the biastjoints. With the seating nipple placedimme- diately above and the polished nipple immediately below a blast joint (or a string of blast joints), a spacer pipe, with seals on both ends, can be eas- ilyrunonwireline and securely locked into place packing off above and be- low the eroded oin(s). Production is thus permitted to continue until a rig, ccan be moved on location to replace the damaged blast joint(s) Inaddition tothe above use, the locking profile of the seating nipple affords the additional flexibility of being able to land plugs, chokes, l., as needed FLOW CONTROL Model “F* Seating Nipple sl (xcept 206, 3:12 and 3.31) Modo "F" Seating Nipple Sis: 206, 312,51 MODEL “F”™ SEATING NIPPLES Alloy Steel - Product No. 801-50 Stainless Steel - Product No. 801-51 ‘The Model"F* Seating Nippleis a topno- 90 of selective seating nipple that pro- Vides forthe location of various wireline flow control devices in the production string, The location and number of Model “F" Seating Nipples should be carefully considered in the completion planning stages to.allow maximum versatility in the positioning of various flow control accessories, Model "F* Seating Nipples are manu- faotured per NACE MR-01-75 (latest ro- vision) FEATURES/BENEFITS + Material selection —alloy stool, stain- Jess steel and 9Cr-Mo are heat- treated to NACE specifications Versatility — functions in top no-go or selective systems + Seal bore — contoured and polished to pass chevron. packing without damage Integral locking groove OD same as coupling OD with proper- ties corresponding to N-80 or better + Nipples orderedwith tured-down Ds correspond to turned-down N-80 cou- plings in diameter and properties APPLICATIONS. As inthe past, Baker continues its role as a leading developer and manufacturer of innova- tive and quality products for the petro- leum industry. For several years, Baker has manufactured ane of Flow Control products equalled by few of its competitors Atthe heart of this Flow Control ine is aunique locking system made to meet, the most severe conditions known — from the most corrosive of well uid to Utra-high pressures. This unique lock- ing system is called the Baker “Sur-Set” Lock. As the name implies, the “Sur-Set” Lock is designed so that it may only be located and setin a proper nipple profile ‘or the lock will be brought tothe surface with the wireline tool string, ‘The "Sur-Set” Lockis vibration proof. Repeated testing has shown that the unique locking mechanism designed for the "Sur-Set" Lock makes it incapable of being unseated. ‘Through sound engineering design, the new “Sur-Set” Locks have several features that set them apart from any other lock on the market. 24 ‘These features include: + Simple and rugged construction. + Large area pressure-bearing locking dogs for greater pressure capabilities both from above and below. An inno- vative conceptthatis designedto elim: nate no-go swaging, + H,SICO, resistant service at 300°F (148,8°C) with standard seals. Positive locking mechanism that pre- vents vibration effects from unseating the locks. * Allarger flow area through the lock's internal fishing neck. AAppositive locking indicator in the run- ning tool to confirm that the “Sur-Set" Lock is set as designed. + A smooth bore inside the lock that inhibits corrosion o sticking by foreign elements. + Alocking mechanism that is located above the sealing elements thereby eliminating the need for o-ings. + The use of running and puling tools thatare compatible with normal wireline ‘equipment and procedures. Baker “Sur-Set” Locks are available in two basic versions depending on the type receptacles they are to be locked into and its service pressure, TOP NO-GO has a top no-go shoulder (nthe locking mandrel to prevent down- ward movement, 1. Model “AF"— 10,000 psi (689,6 bar) working pressure above and below. 2, Model "HE" — 15,000 psi (1034,4 bar) working pressure below and 10,000 psi (689,6 bar) above. BOTTOM NO-GO has a botiom no-go shoulder on the locking mandrel to pre- vent downward movement. 1. Model “AR"— 10,000 psi (689,6bar) working pressure above and below. 2. Model "HR? — 15,000 psi (1034,4 bar) working pressure below and 10,000 psi (6889,6 bar) above. Like the locks, the seating nipples are made for a variety of working pressures from 10,000 psi (689,6 bar) to over 15,000 psi (1034,4 bar) and are either topno-go orbottom no-go. For simplicity in Selecting the correct combinations of lock and seating nipples, the seating nipples bear the same letter designation as theit compatible locks. ‘Along with the Baker “Sur-Set* Wireline Locking System comes the de- velopment of many new stronger and more corrosion resistant Flow Control products, 2s well as a host of existing products.
