THE URINARY SYSTEM

The urinary system, also known as urinary tract or renal system consisting of particular organs
with different purposes, are;
 To produce, store and eliminate urine
 To control electrolytes and metabolites level &
 To regulate blood volume, pressure and blood pH

Organs of Renal System
Primary organs of the urinary system are;
1. The Kidneys (Bean-shaped)
2. Ureters (Two thin tubes)
3. Urinary bladder (A hollow, balloon-shaped organ)
4. Urethra

Functions of the Urinary System
The main functions of the urinary system and its components are to

 Regulate blood volume and composition (e.g. sodium, potassium and calcium)
 Regulate blood pressure.
 Regulate pH homeostasis of the blood.
 Contributes to the production of red blood cells by the kidney.
 Stores waste product (mainly urea and uric acid) before it and other products are removed
from the body.
