-Amikacin is bactericidal; it
Available Forms: inhibits directly to the 30S
Available by ribosomal subunit, thus
prescription only inhibiting bacterial protein
Injection: 50mg/ml,
synthesis. Its spectrum of
250mg/ml
activity includes many
aerobic gram-negative
Usual Route: organisms (including most
Onset: Unknown strains of Pseudomonas
Peak: Unknown aeruginosa) and some
aerobic gram-positive
organisms. Amikacin may
act against some organisms
resistant to other
aminoglycosides, such as
Proteus, Pseudomonas, and
serratia species; some strains
of these may be resistant to
amikacin. Drug is ineffective
against anaerobes.
Indications:
- Serious infections caused
by susceptible ganisms. 
Indicated for short-term 
treatment of serious 
infections due to susceptible
strains of Gram-negative 
bacteria, including  -muscle twitching and
Pseudomonas species,
 -dizziness
Escherichia coli, species of

indole-positive and indole-
 Adverse Reactions:
negative Proteus.
Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients
with hypersensitivity to drug
or other aminoglycosides.
Use cautiously in patients
with impaired renal function
or neuromuscular disorders,
in neonates and infants, and
in elderly patients.
Side Effects:
1. Before initial dose,
-diarrhea C&S; renal function
-hearing loss and
-spinning sensation (vertigo) vestibulocochlear
-numbness nerve function (and
-skin tingling at regular intervals
during therapy;
convulsions

the older adult,
patients with
documented ear
problems, renal
CNS: neuromuscular
impairment, or
blockade.
EENT: ototoxicity during high dose or
GU: nephrotoxicity, prolonged therapy).
