MLA Format

MLA is the abbreviation of Modern language association. It is a standard format for essays and
research papers which are meant to be written in academic settings. This format was
developed so that there is an uniformity in the assignments by which it will be easier to
examine and the marks judged would be more justified and accurate.

 Paper type: high quality white paper and for size, 8 and a half by 11 inch paper is
recommended.
 MLA heading: first your name should be mentioned then the name of your
teacher/instructor followed by the name of the course/subject. Below that the
assignment’s due date should be included. The assignment’s title should be placed
below the due date. Everything should have a double space gap and the title should be
centre aligned. Underlines, italicized font, bold font or any quotation marks should not
be used.
 Header: The header should consist your name followed by the page number with space
in between. It should be placed in the upper right corner, one half inch from the top and
 Margins: one inch margins should be used in the entire page
 Paragraphs: The first word in every paragraph should be indented and sentences should
begin one half inch from the left margin.
 Quotations: the use of quotations should be limited. While mentioning a quote, the
individual who originally wrote the quote should be credited by adding “MLA format in
text citation”
 Spacing: The entire research paper should include double spaced lines
 Font: any font type that is easy to read can be used, for the size, 12 point size is
recommended.
 Months: the entire month name should be typed out. Eg: November instead on Nov.
 Images and tables: All images should include information about its origin. A label for the
image should be created, a caption can also be provided. Label tables with “table” give
it Arabic numerals and a title. This information has to be located above the table,
underneath the table, the source or any notes should be provided.
 Lists: Items in the lists should be formatted in horizontal order instead of vertical order.
A colon can be placed between the introductory sentence and the list.
 Works cited: The citation should be mentioned in the last page of the research paper or
essay. It should be placed in alphabetical order and the entire page has to be double
spaced.
