A PhD at the UG
Dutch universities offer a great environment for those wishing to undertake a PhD, with
research in the Netherlands being held in high regard internationally. Most programmes
typically take four full years and are based on individual research. At the UG, research
takes place at Graduate Schools which provide a balanced mix of expert supervision and

The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies is


one of the founding faculties of the University of
Groningen, having celebrated its fourth centenary
in 2014. With its combination of approaches from
the humanities and the social sciences, the Faculty
contributes significantly to the strong scholarly
reputation of the University of Groningen, both
in Europe and globally. Our academic staff covers
a variety of fields and comprises religious study
specialists, political scientists, (art) historians,
philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists and
psychologists.

The Faculty is organised in three research


departments, addressing three major research areas
and societal issues:

and Islam in their formative phases;
› The appearance of religion in its continuing global
importance, both in comparative and historical
