Tapping Practitioner Certification Course
Workbook!

You'll find each section of the course has its


own section of the workbook for you to print
off, should you wish to, and make notes on
as you follow the course through.

If you are just starting out on the course


and haven't met me yet, hello! My name is
Graham Nicholls, I'm a Strategic Coach,
Trainer and Author from the UK and I have
been following, learning about and growing
in the world of EFT and TFT for many years
now. I'd love to share with you what I have

hopefully if you choose to, go on and use it
to help others.

As mentioned above we, as human beings,


learn best when we are experiencing what
we are trying to learn..... but..... we only ever
retain knowledge and become competent by
practising what we have learned.

The hardest part of practising is when we get


it wrong and when we make mistakes. It is at
those points that most people give up and
exclaim something along the lines of "it's just
not for me"

Those that truly want to learn and grow take

Heart Activation Breathing

"Find a comfortable place to sit, somewhere


with your back supported that you can just
relax and listen to my voice. You can have
your feet up or down, that doesn't really
matter, make sure your hands are free and
resting comfortably to start with.

As you listen to my voice and start to relax,


close your eyes and just concentrate on
relaxing. As you do so I want you to take your
right-hand and place it on your chest, just to
the left of centre so that it covers your heart.

As you do so I want you to start focussing on


your breathing, concentrate on breathing in a
nice deep and comfortable rhythm, not

"forcing your breath, just a comfortably deep
breathing rhythm. As you do this you will find
yourself relaxing more and more with each
breath.

Now, with each breath in I want you to feel


that breath go through your heart, physically
feel each breath in pass through your heart.
And with each breath out I want you to feel
that breath pass through your heart, again,
physically passing through your heart as you
breathe out.

With each breath in you are breathing in
calm, relaxed feelings and with each breath
out you are breathing out all the stresses of
your world and letting them disappear out
into the atmosphere.

With every breath you relax more and the


more you relax the better you feel, and the
better you feel the more relaxed you feel, and

Now as you start to relax let me explain how
this works. It is possible to measure the
electrical pulses from both the heart and
brain and this can be viewed on monitors
showing peaks and troughs of these pulses.

When we are in a place that is not calm, a


place of anxiety, anger, frustration,
depression or stress, those monitors will show
lines of peaks and troughs that are
completely out of sync with each other, that
does not match in any way.

When we concentrate on breathing through


our hearts for as little as two to three minutes
we start to bring those peaks and troughs into
alignment, until they match exactly. At this
point, we can think clearly from both heart
and head.

Our head, on its own, will always lie to us as it
is designed to protect us in any form. Our
heart, on the other hand, tells us the truth,
the truth from the core of who we are. When
we put both in alignment we are able to see
any situation clearly.

Now, as you remain in this relaxed state and


breathing in and out through your heart I
want you to think about two or three things
in your life that, if you could, you would be
grateful for right now. They don't have to be
big things, they could be as simple as being
grateful for waking up this morning as many
around the world didn't. Or it could be feeling
grateful for your family, your home, the food
you have to eat and the water you have to
drink, what 2 areas could you be grateful for
right now? (Pause to allow them to think)

Now, you can slowly start to return to the
room. Take your time to open your eyes and
allow them to re-focus and, if your hand is
still on your heart, you can allow it to drop to
a comfortable position.

Take a look around the room and notice two


things that you either haven't noticed for a
while or you have never noticed before. What
is the first thing? And what is the second
thing that you have either not noticed for a
while or you have never noticed before?

Now that you have returned to the room and


you are back here with me, how do you feel?"

A History of Tapping

The tapping journey has come on a long way


since the late TFT founder Dr. Roger
Callahan “cured” Mary's water phobia by
tapping under her eye in the 1980s. Since
then energy-pioneers such as Gary Craig,
Silvia Hartmann, Robert. G. Smith, Rehana
Webster, Dr. David Lake, Steve Wells, Karl
Dawson, David Feinstein and Dr. Dawson
Church have continued to evolve the field,
giving us new tools and methods such as
EFT, Energy EFT, Positive EFT, Faster EFT,
TBT, Clinical EFT and Matrix Reimprinting.

Below is a outline of the timeline of the


development of TFT and into TFT.
An EFT and TFT Timeline

1980's ............. Dr. Roger Callahan starts to


develop a tapping process he
calls Thought Field Therapy
or TFT.

1990's .............. Gary Craig becomes a student


of Dr. Callahan studying TFT.
He starts to develop TFT in to
a 'One Stop Process' which he
calls the Emotional Freedom
Technique or EFT.

1998 ................. Gary Craig launches a


website with specific training
in EFT.

1998 ................. In the same year Sylvia


Hartmann starts studying
EFT.
An EFT and TFT Timeline

1999 ................... Sylvia Hartmann developed


a new form of EFT called
EFT Energy

The story continues....

All three of these disciplines have continued


to be developed over the years and these are
the three we are focussing on within this
course.

There have been other side disciplines to EFT


developed as well, however I have chosen
these three as the developing founders of the
tapping movement.
EFT & TFT - The Main Difference

Here are some of the main differences


between TFT and EFT (we will discuss EFT
Energy later in the course.)

- While EFT is a 'one-stop-shop' tapping


procedure where all points are tapped during
the procedure, TFT is a more focused
approach and has specific 'algorithms' or
routines for individual issues.

- TFT uses a tapping point called the


Psychological Reversal (PR) point as a
separate treatment whereas EFT uses it in
all treatments and calls it the 'Karate Chop
Point'

- TFT relies on the client thinking about their


issue while EFT has them say a specific
phrase out loud.

- EFT and TFT both use something called the


Gamut series (discussed later in the course)
but TFT has a slightly different 'closing
procedure' to EFT.

The Meridian Pathways

Undetectable to the naked eye, the body


Meridians are imperative to our daily health
and well-being. Simply put, they are a
complex system of energy pathways that
flow throughout the human body, with the
purpose of delivering essential energy or ‘chi’
to each of our organs; Meridians are
responsible for all of the body’s major organ
systems including the nervous system,
circulatory, respiratory, immune, skeletal,
muscular and digestive. Occasionally, small
blockages or imbalances of energy can occur
throughout the body, which if left untreated
has the potential to result in an array of
unpleasant symptoms – the details of which
are dependant on the location of the
blockage.
The Meridian Pathways

Through the flow of chi, the meridians


support and stables the body’s energy,
remove blockages and even regulate the
metabolism; all of which contribute to the
body functioning smoothly. Sometimes, a
little help needs to be given to aid this
process; to do this, certain points situated
along the meridians can be stimulated with
fine needles – this is known as acupuncture.
This process encourages fresh chi to flow
through the energy channels, clearing out
any blockages and rebalancing your system.

Following on the same lines as acupuncture,


EFT and TFT Tapping uses certain Meridian
Points to free up the body's natural energy
flow.

The Tapping Points

Following the Meridian Pathways around the


body, Dr Callahan discovered certain points
that, if tapped in a certain order, would
release the issue or emotion.

Gary Craig then took these points and


created the EFT system of using all of the
tapping points.

The diagram on the next page shows all of


the tapping points and these are explained
further in the course.

Tapping Methodology

Different people have different ways of


tapping the various points and I openly
encourage you to try different methods to see
what works for you. I describe
various different methods within the course
itself.

Personally, I use the top of my index and


middle finger together to tap the relevant
points.

It's important you find what is right for you


and give your clients options so they choose
what is right for them.

The Mind-Body Connection

Within the course, I talk about Dr Candace


Pert, the doctor who is responsible for the
scientific and medical discovery of the mind-
body connection.

I highly recommend you look further into Dr

of the complementary therapies such as EFT
and TFT.

Helping Practitioner Basics

I know there will be those of you taking this


course who are already within the Helping
Industry as Practitioners of other disciplines
or Coaches or Therapists. There will also be
those of you who are just starting out in the
Helping Industry so I wanted to make sure
you get to grips with the basics of helping.

So in this section, we are looking at some


basics such as:

- The Art of Listening
- The Art of Questioning

Building Rapport and Trust with your clients
is crucial to your success. People who don't
trust with you and whom you do not have a
rapport built will not react well to the
treatment you are offering them and will,
most likely, not return.

So let's look at some of the keys to building


rapport and trust:

Matching & Mirroring Body Language.

There's an old saying that goes "people like


people like themselves" so if you can get
someone to believe you are like them they
will connect with you.
The first step in this is watching their body
language and copying it.

You can probably list more than five can't


you! One of the most powerful ways of
matching body language is through
matching someone's breathing pattern. This
connects you to them at an unconscious
level and builds rapport quickly. You have to
be careful to not stare at their chest or
shoulders when doing this so it's definitely
worth practising this skill.

Matching Language Patterns

Another great way to build rapport is


through understanding your clients'
language patterns and 'speaking' the same
language.

We speak using 3 of our senses;

- Visual, what we see and look at.


- Auditory, what we hear and listen to
- Kinesthetic, what we touch and how we
feel.

If two people are having a conversation and


one is speaking using a visual style but the
other is communicating using a kinesthetic
style they will not connect at a deep level.

One of the key ways on which to build trust
with someone is to listen to them to truly
understand them as an individual.

Most people will have very rarely, if ever,


have been listened to at a deep level where
the person listening has no judgement of
them and is purely there for them.

Ensure you take the time to put all you


'stuff' - your emotions and preconceptions -
aside so that you are totally focused on your
client.

The Art of Questioning

While most clients will come happily ready


to tell you what their main issue is, there's
is a good chance that what they come to you
with is not their real issue.

It is one of the key skills of any Helping


Practitioner to find the truth behind the
presenting issue.

We do this through asking focused


questions to the client to gain more
information, understand them and allow
them to understand themselves.

Firstly, we must ask 'open' questions, these


are questions that require more than just

a one-word answer. Questions that require a


simple one-word answer are called closed
questions. Closed questions are not valuable
to us as they provide little to no
information.

The Art of Questioning

When we combine Listening and


Questioning we can really get to understand
the person in front of us and allow them to
understand themselves.

As a Helping Practitioner, it is useful to


listen out for opportunities to gain more
information from the client and then ask
appropriate questions.

In NLP there is a language model called


"The Meta Model" which, at a very basic
level, searches for opportunities to gain
more information. If you are interested in
learning more about the Meta Model I can
highly recommend the following book:

After watching the video to this section


start to identify areas of your own
communication that could offer up more
information if you were in front of a Helping
Practitioner. When talking to friends start
to listen out for the patterns in their
language and when you could get more
information about what they are discussing.

"Tell me more about that" or "Give me some


more thoughts on that so that I can
understand.

are going to look at tuning and creating
'State' with your clients.

Our emotional state is created from 3 areas


of us:

1 - Our Physical Association with the


emotion.

2 - That which we pay Attention to when


we want to feel that emotion.

3 - The Language we use both internally

Creating & Breaking State
We can use the knowledge of how emotions
are created to encourage our clients in to
the right emotional state so that they can
score or rate their issue.

This we call 'tuning' in EFT, we help them to


create the emotional state they have come
to us for help with so that they can
understand where they are in the current
moment and where they move to.

It is also important that we know how to


'break' that emotional state with them so
that they do not stay there. Remember, this
is only for the purposes of rating the issue
they have come to you for help with.

Tuning & Rating
There are two differing ways of rating your
clients' issue within the different disciplines
of EFT. The Subjective Unit of Distress (SUD)
Scale and the Subjective Unit of Experience
(SUE) Scale.

My personal preference is for the SUE Scale


however the choice of which to use is yours.
Below I have added diagrams for both and
within the video section, I describe the two
scales in detail along with why I prefer the
SUE Scale.

That brings us to the close of this section,
but before we go I want to reiterate how
important it is to ensure you get this tuning
and rating from your client.

Very often clients will get to the end of the


session and will rate their level of issue
lower than when they started. They may
think that this is purely distraction, that
they were mistaken or even that they didn't
rate their issue that high to begin with.

Please make sure you write this initial


rating down or get them to so that the
effectiveness of your work with them and
their improvements are clear.

Welcome to Section Five of this course, in


this section we are really getting into the
heart of traditional EFT!

When working with a client you will have


got to the point of tuning and rating their
issue so what comes next? I hear you ask.

Now that you have the information of what


their issue is you need to create a statement
or phrase for them to use during the opening
tapping process and then a shorter version
for use during the rest of the process.

In the videos I describe the phrasing and I


have added it below.
Statement Phrasing

"Even though I have ..... (insert stated issue


here) ... I completely respect and accept
myself"

So as an example:

"Even though I have felt angry, I completely


respect and accept myself"

This is then shortened for use during the


main part of the tapping process to

"felt angry"

The Closing Procedure
The closing procedure in EFT is called the
Gamut Series and is used when the client has
rated their issue as having reduced their
issue significantly.

The procedure is completed while tapping the


'Gamut Spot' which is situated on the back of
the hand, approximately halfway down the
hand in between the bones leading to the
little finger and ring finger. I describe and
show this to you during the video.

The Gamut Series is designed to engage all


areas of the brain to 'lock in' the changes and
improvements. It may seem slightly strange
while going through it and yet it has been
proven to be effective in both EFT and TFT.
I run through the Gamut Series with you in
the video and, again, I encourage you to go
through this with me and experience it for
yourself. Here's the series....
While tapping the Gamut Spot have your
eyes open as you start tapping;

- Close your eyes


- Open your eyes
- Look down and to the left then return your
eyes to centre
- Look down and to the right then return your
eyes to centre
- Whirl your eyes around in one direction
- Whirl your eyes around in the opposite
direction
- Hum approx 5 seconds of the tune Happy
Birthday
- Count, out loud, from 1 to 5 and then 5 to 1
- Hum approx 5 seconds of the tune Happy
Birthday again.
Finally, continue tapping the Gamut Spot for
a short period of time then come to a stop,
relax and breathe.

Below I have left space for your notes on the


process.

EFT Energy

EFT Energy works and uses very similar


methods to traditional EFT with some subtle
changes. In this section we will run through
those alterations so that you have a choice of
what to use with your clients.

EFT Energy uses the SUE scale when tuning


and rating the clients' issue and, as I have
mentioned before, this is my preferred scale
to use.

However, this is still your choice! You can


use whichever scale you feel comfortable
with. Clients will know if you are comfortable
or not with the tools you are using so make
sure they are right for you!
Statements and Phrasing

EFT Energy uses two statements rather


than one that is used in traditional EFT.
Before starting with a client you create a
'negative' statement and a 'positive'
statement.

When starting the procedure, once you have


tuned and rated the issue, the client begins
with the 'negative' statement. As you go
through the procedure you re-rate the issue
and as the client improves you ask them if
they would like to switch to their positive
statement.

Please note, you only switch to the positive


statement when the client is ready to do so.
Positive & Negative Statements

Opening Negative Statement

"Even though I felt .... (insert issue) .... I


completely respect and accept myself"

Example:
"Even though I felt angry, I completely
respect and accept myself"

Follow on Positive Statement

"Now that I am ... (insert opposite of


negative statement) .. I completely and
totally love and accept myself"

Example:
"Now that I am calm and relaxed, I
completely and totally love and accept
myself"
Starting Procedure

At the start of the EFT Energy procedure


you get your clients to place their hands on
the hearts and say "I"
They should then take three deep breaths
and on exhale they should say their
negative statements with each breath.

Tapping Points

Please note that EFT Energy uses tapping


points on all of the fingers which adds one
tapping point to the traditional EFT Method.

Follow the same procedure as with


traditional EFT of using a shortened version
of the negative statement while tapping all
points in sequence.
Once the client has chosen to switch to the
positive statement, follow the tapping
process through again and re-rate at the
end.

Closing Procedure

Please Note: EFT Energy does not use the


Gamut Series as a closing procedure.

The closing procedure for EFT Energy is as


follows:

- Place your hands on your heart and say I


- Take three deep breaths and at the point of
exhaling say the positive statement each
time.

Choices and Options

So, that brings us to the end of the section


on EFT Energy and you now have
knowledge of two similar processes that you
can use with your clients.

I hope that you have followed the video's


through and joined in with me in the tapping
sessions so that you gain that experience.

with family and friends and use both
processes to see if you are more comfortable
with one or the other. It may be that both
work for you and you can use them for

We are now moving into the section for


TFT, the originating form of tapping. In
TFT there are specific sequences, or
algorithms, for specific issues and there
are some key differences to the process of
EFT.

The Key Differences

Other than the fact that each issue has it's


own algorithm there are a couple of key
differences between EFT and TFT, on the
next page we will run through those before
going through the core algorithms within
TFT.
The Psychological Reversal (PR) Spot

The PR Spot used in TFT is at the same point


as the "Karate Chop" point used in EFT.
However, Dr Callahan only used this PR spot
when progress has stalled. He believed that
when working through the SUD scale and
the client got 'stuck'

He would use tapping this PR spot to


'unstick' them as he believed that their
delayed process was due to an energy
blockage or reversal preventing them from
moving forward.

It's worth pointing out that this is why EFT


uses the Karate Chop point in every process
as Gary Craig believed it would remove any
Psychological reversal if there.
The Gamut Series

In EFT, the Gamut Series is used as a


closing procedure, however, in TFT it is
used in every algorithm as part of the
process. You will see as we go through each
algorithm that the Gamut Series is
incorporated.

The Closing Procedure

As the Gamut Series is included within the


specific algorithms, we use a different
closing procedure in TFT. This is a later
discovery of Dr. Callahans and uses the
eyes to open and instill the changes into the
mind. The closing procedure is a simple
process of looking down and rolling the eyes
past centre and up to the ceiling. This
should take around 5-7 seconds.
To phrase or not to phrase....

As you discovered, within EFT we use


specific phrasing and statements while
going through the tapping process and EFT
Energy we use two phrases, moving from
negative to positive.

In TFT we do not speak aloud, we ask the


client to inwardly concentrate on the issue.
Dr Callahan felt that this was the most
effective way to help his clients.

So we ask the clients to tune and rate their


experience as with EFT, but, they focus on
that internally while going through the
tapping process.
TFT Algortihms

So, we are now moving on to the specific


algorithms for varying issues. On the next
few pages, you will find the algorithms
described. Please make sure you follow
these through with me in the video's so
that you can gain the experience. The
algorithms we will cover are:

- Depression
- Anxiety
- Anger
- Phobia
- Physical Pain

Tap the following points....

Question One - How long will it last?

The truth to that is that it can last forever!


Some people think that it is just distracting
them from their issues and therefore their
issues will return, this is simply not the case.
It is important to point out though, that
people get out of it what they put in. By this I
mean that if they are honest with you as a
client and therefore with themselves they let
themselves open up to change. This makes
using the energy flows much easier and
effective. Having said that, there have been
many disbelievers who have shown amazing
results over time!

Frequently Asked Questions

Question Two - Can it be repeated?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, I would suggest that


most clients will need more than one session
anyway.

If, for any reason, their issue returns or they


even feel like it is returning the process can
be repeated.

It's another important note that tapping does


no harm to you whatsoever, even if you have
no issues. Tapping is a completely safe
complimentary therapy.

Question Three - What if it doesn't work?

Both Dr Callahan and Gary Craig had


evidential studies that showed tapping
worked with around 80% of their clients - an
amazing hit rate I'm sure you'll agree.

However, there is the other 20% right! As a


responsible practitioner, I highly recommend
having a list of contact details for other
therapists, practitioners and professionals
who you can refer people to. Make contact
with those people and form a bond with them
so that you know you can trust them.
