Introduction

Welcome to Math 8. This is the first course in high school mathematics. The pace
of the course is quick in that we will usually cover a new section each day. You
are expected to keep up with the material and seek extra help when you need it.

Course Expectations

 It is expected students will adhere to the normal rules set out by the school in
regards to student behavior.

 It is of utmost importance that students will be in class and on time, as all

lessons, demonstrations and tests will be held at the beginning of class.

 This course will be held in a computer lab as we will be using several math
websites in support of the textbook and teacher lessons. You are expected
to stay on task.

 Cell phones are not permitted during instructional time. During work time
music is permitted, provided it is used in an appropriate manner with
headphones. Texting, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, and other social media
are not permitted.

Course Materials

You are expected to bring the following to class every day:

 Textbook (Math Focus 8)
 Binder with graph paper
 Calculator
 Pencil and Eraser
 Pencil Crayons (Red, Yellow and Green)
 A positive attitude
What a Typical Class Looks Like:

A typical math class will break down like this:

~10 min: Review of previous days’ concepts and assignment
~20 min: Lesson on current topic & Thinking Classroom Group Question(s)
~30 minutes: Time to work on Current assignment
~5 minutes: Wrap up and last-minute questions. Preview of next day’s lesson.

Assignments

A math assignment will be assigned every day and due the following day.
Typically, after the lesson, students will have between 30 – 40 minutes in class to
work on their assignments. Students are expected to verify answers to their
solutions with the answers available in the back of the textbook and submit to the
assignment basket by the next day’s class.

We will have time at the start of each lesson to discuss any questions about the
previous day’s assignment.

We will be using the “Stop Light” method of self-evaluation:

Green = I got it right and I understand.
Yellow = I got it incorrect, but I have figured it out and have corrected the
mistake.
Red = I got it incorrect and I don’t understand why.

It is expected that you show all work in your assignments!

Assignments are scored on the following:

EMERGING = Most Questions not attempted

DEVELOPING = Most Questions attempted
PROFICIENT = Most Questions attempted and work/process is
demonstrated.
EXTENDING = Most Questions attempted, work/process is demonstrated
and assignments are marked and corrected.

Assignments should be submitted on graph paper, in pencil, with your name and
date in the top right corner and page and question number of the assignment in
the top left.

Once we have completed a unit test, assignments for that unit will no longer be
accepted. Students with exceptional circumstances are encouraged to speak
with the teacher as exceptions may be granted.

Extra Help
If you do not understand something please come and ask for extra help. It is
amazing what can be accomplished in a few minutes of individual explanation.

I am usually in my room by 8:15 in the morning, during most lunch hours and
after school until 4pm.

If you get tired of hearing me explain it, there is also extra help available at lunch
and after school from Grade 12 tutors.

Tests

I know tests make some people nervous or freak out, so I promise there will be
no surprise tests or quizzes. You can see the dates for tests on the attached
syllabus.

There will be a chapter review the class before the test so you can review your
skills and we will have a 5-minute question period before the test begins in case
you have any last minute questions. You won’t need to memorize any formulas
(yet), as we’ll make sure they are clearly provided for you.

If you miss a test, you will be expected to make it up at lunch or after school as
soon as is convenient.

Course Content

Students will learn about many math topics, please see the chart below for topics
and an estimate on number of classes per topic. Please see the attached
