1. SUBJECT: PITT-CHAR®NX Mastic and Intumescent Coatings

2. SCOPE OF EVALUATION

 2012 and 2015 International Building Code ® (IBC)

The scope of this Evaluation Report is limited only to engineering analysis based on a comparison of
building element, component or assemblies designs having fire-resistance ratings as determined by the
test procedures set forth in ANSI/UL 263 or ANSI/UL 1709 (for example, as permitted by International
Building Code (IBC), Section 703.3).
3. REFERENCED DOCUMENTS

 ANSI/UL 263 (ASTM E119), Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, 14th edition
 ANSI/UL 1709, Rapid Rise Fire Tests of Protection Materials for Structural Steel, 5th edition

4. USES

Types PITT-CHAR®NX fireproofing materials are intumescent paints that are applied for fire resistance
protection of structural steel framing members. This Evaluation Report is limited to the analysis and
alternate limiting temperature thicknesses for the type of structural steel (e.g. Column) as shown in the
individual tables here within.

5. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Types PITT-CHAR®NX Mastic and Intumescent Coatings.

The products referenced above were evaluated for the following properties only:

 Fire Resistance

6. ALTERNATE LIMITING TEMPERATURE ANALYSIS

This Report covers Types PITT-CHAR®NX Mastic and Intumescent Coating products design tables for
an alternate limiting temperature.

During the UL 263 and UL 1709 evaluation, the thickness of the fire resistive material is established
based on limiting steel temperatures of 1100°F [593°C] (average)/1300°F [704°C] (individual) and
1000°F [538°C] (average) /1200°F [649°C] (individual) for beams and columns, respectively. Based on
the fire tests conducted and the performance of the fire resistive material, an Alternate Limiting
Temperature Thickness has been established. The alternate limiting temperature is a UL design specific
data point that identifies the appropriate coating thickness for the selected steel size, limiting steel
temperature and a specified time duration. The coating thickness identified in Table 1 and 2 is based on
a limiting temperature of 750°F (400°C) and 800°F (427°C) average column temperatures with an
additional 950°F or 1000°F individual temperature failure point imposed. This table is provided as
additional information only for implementation by Authorities Having Jurisdiction. This data provides
engineering analysis based on the test procedures set forth in ANSI/UL 263 and ANSI/UL 1709 (for
example, as permitted by International Building Code (IBC), Section 703.3). The test methods for
ANSI/UL 263 and ANSI/UL 1709 have similar approaches for establishing fire resistance ratings and
therefore lend themselves to this type of engineering analysis. This information is intended to be used in
conjunction with the specified UL Design only. All requirements specified in the UL Design shall be met
to achieve the appropriate analysis.

7. FIRE RESISTANCE CLASSIFICATION

7.1 Refer to UL File R9607 for product Classification under category Mastic and Intumescent Coatings
(CDWZ), and Column Design No. XR658 for fire resistance ratings in accordance with UL1709.

8. CONDITIONS OF USE

The Alternate Limiting Temperature is intended to be used in conjunction with UL Design No. XR658 only.
All required components specified in the referenced UL Design shall remain as required components to
achieve the time periods shown using the alternate limiting temperature thickness. Only the version of UL
Design No. XR658 as shown on http://www.ul.com is considered current.

9. SUPPORTING EVIDENCE

9.1 UL test reports and Classification in accordance with ANSI/UL 1709. See UL Product Certification
Category for Mastic and Intumescent Coatings (CDWZ).

10. IDENTIFICATION

PPG Coating Europe BV Types PITT-CHAR®NX described in this Evaluation Report are identified by a
marking bearing the report holder’s name (PPG Coating Europe BV), the product name, the UL
Classification Mark and the UL file number. The validity of this Evaluation Report is contingent upon this
identification appearing on the product.
