When I was eleven years old my little sister was born, and it made a huge impact on my

life because she is my favorite person and means the world to me. Not only is she my “mini me”

but she is one of the many reasons why I wake up in the morning because I love seeing her

smiling face. She may get on my nerves occasionally, but you can’t stay mad at her for long

because she is just an amazing human being. Having her in my life has made an impact on my

life because I have learned to deal with a toddler and a younger child, and it has made me think

about what I want to do in the future.

Brooklynn was born on August 9, 2013 and I remember the day like it was yesterday. I

knew what was happening because my dad picked me up from daycare early and I didn’t live

with my dad at the time. Once I got to the hospital and saw her, I knew it was going to be the

best day of my life. Holding my little sister in my arms was one of the best feelings ever. She

was so small and so warm it was like you never want to let go. Brooklynn was born with

Amniotic Band Syndrome, so she has one hand that is smaller than the other and that made a big

impact on us and her because we had to learn how to work with her disability, but it doesn’t

bother her one bit.

Having a sister who is eleven years younger than you makes an impact on not only me

but also on the rest of my family as well. My stepmom had to start all over again, but good thing

she knew what she was doing. As I started to get older and so did Brooklynn, my stepmom

would make me, and my other siblings watch her when she wasn’t home. I really took on the

“mom role” when she wasn’t home. I would wake her up, take care of her, give her food when

she needs it, and even just playing with her made me realize that I am taking care of a kid who

needs me. Now having this thought process of making sure she's dressed and not hungry or that

she gets comforted when she is hurt or feeling sad made me really think about what my parents

do for not only me but all my siblings and Brooklynn too.

Growing up with a child made me really start to enjoy being around kids. I enjoy making

them laugh and watching them learn new things all the time and it made me think about what I

want to do with the rest of my life after high school. I want to go to school for early childhood

education and teach kindergarten. Babysitting is also one of my favorite things to do. If it’s not

Brooklynn it is other families and I watch their kids and that brings me so much happiness when

I get to be around children all day or night.

I love Brooklynn to death and having her in my life has made a huge impact on me. Not

only because I took on the mother role, but she means the absolute world to me and my life

would be completely different without her. She has so much potential and can do so many things

in her life. I can’t wait to watch her grow up and help her along the way because I want to be the

big sister she calls when she needs me.
