Advocates for the Environment

Company Background
E(vergreen) Co., abbreviated as E Co. is a startup company that was established
through a group of individuals collective initiative to embody their advocacy for the betterment of
the current state of the Philippine environment. The company operates on the grounds of
minimizing the Philippines’ contribution to water pollution and transforming the connotation of
the country as a “sachet economy” (The Manila Times, 2019). With this, E Co. wants to create a
product essential to each and every human being that will heed to address the environmental
problems under the scope of commitment to innovation and excellence with adherence to the
constant needs of a developing country through doing good for the whole.

E Co. ultimately envisions the Philippines mitigated from the effects of climate change
and celebrated for transforming its sachet economy in an opportunity that enables people to
earn a living and a foundation laid for an innovation that has helped solve the global waste
problem. Its present commitment to its mission in providing cost-efficient ways to cater to the
construction needs of both commercial and residential sites, with the target market of green
consumers to construction companies possessing the intent of fostering sustainable building
practices in the Philippines are the elements that will guide the company in the years it will
spend in the industry.

The E Co.’s eco-brick displays a newly engineered and a more innovative kind of the
common plastic-filled 1.5 liter PET bottle eco-bricks, hence, the product can be accurately
described as “aesthetically superior, stronger, and more cost-effective.” Consequently, the
made of shredded plastic laminates mixed with cement using a special construction additive on
a brick pressing machine, remaining true to its commitment to improving the global waste
problem. The eco-brick also boasts an interlocking property that results in an easier manner of
stacking and lesser need for cement coverage that reduces construction costs. E Co.’s
eco-bricks’ dimensions are measured at 10” x 5” x 5,” with a compressive strength of 550 PSI,
length of 9.40 inches and a weight of 4.60 kilograms.

Figure 2. Logo
The bricks symbolize the “building blocks” of creating a sustainable environment for
everyone as well as working together in building a more eco-friendly community, one eco-brick
at a time. The word ECO is displayed in the logo as the acronym for the company’s name, the
abbreviation serves as an easier recollection and association of the company to its product.

Figure 3. Organizational Chart

The organization will be primarily headed by the board of directors who will be in charge
of making the final decisions for the organization. The board of directors consists of four
different directors specializing in different areas specifically marketing, finance, human
resources, and information technology. The sub-groups are assigned to different tasks under
each department. The directors are in charge of overseeing if all tasks executed are in line with
the organization’s goals and values, they are also in charge of disseminating information
regarding the employees’ and stakeholder’s concerns and ideas regarding the company to the
board to help the board make the final decisions for the company.

2. Strategic Management

E(vergreen) Co. is a large scale business that inculcates harmony and teamwork
within its departments. In line with this, the company also has a board of directors that
aims to achieve its mission and vision in the most effective and cost-efficient way
possible.

Despite the innovative prospects of the business, the company’s productivity may
also be hindered by several factors. On the other hand, along with the strengths and
weaknesses, the opportunities and threats are also taken into consideration by the
business which is thoroughly discussed on the next page.

Figure 4. SWOT Analysis

Furthermore, the main goal of E(vergreen) Co. is to deliver cost-efficient and

sustainable eco-bricks to cater to the lifestyles of both building firms and households. To
maximize its potential, the following strategies on the company’s department will be
implemented. These are:

1. E(vergreen) Co.’s human resources department will set up a hub and partner up
with the LGU or an organization to every respective branch. With this, the
company would be able to hire and choose the capable members of the
community who could perform operations effectively. Afterward, a series of
trainings will be done to ensure the safety and quality standards of the
eco-bricks. While this would consume a lot of time, effort, and budget, it is for the
long-term benefit of the enterprise as the eco-brick would easily be marketed
through hubs and partner organizations.

2. To prosper and increase the profitability of the eco-bricks which is one of the
company’s current weaknesses, the marketing department will hire influential
environmentalists to act as ambassadors for the product to cater to a wider
audience. These ambassadors would come from a.) those who are willing to
endorse the product with only a small charge, and b.) when the market is already
established and the company has enough resources already, those who are
advocates of environmental protection specifically Enchong Dee and Bea Binene
will be hired. However, in comparison with the mentioned artists, the
ambassadors who are just willing to endorse the product might not create a
significant effect on the company. On the other hand, this would allow the
company to create a brand; but as aforementioned, the company has yet to
flourish. Thus, there is no assurance that the company could immediately create
huge profits especially that it is new to the market. Nonetheless, big or small
publicity is still publicity.

3. The marketing department will also be publishing TV commercials that aim to

promote the product, show alternatives for hollow blocks, and ultimately,
advocate environmental awareness. This might be costly as it may seem, but
according to a survey conducted by Global Web Index last 2018, it was revealed
that there is a significant percentage of people who are willing to pay for
eco-friendly products at an expensive price, they are identified as “green
consumers.” The data is as follows: 58% of Gen Z (ages 16-21), 61% of
millennials (ages 22-35), 55% of Gen X (ages 36-54), and 46% of Baby Boomers
(ages 55-64). The materials of eco-bricks cost less than its counterpart in the
market; therefore, it can be foreseen that there will be a demand for eco-bricks
both from the green consumers and the general public alike. Consequently, it can
be deduced that promoting the product is vital as it would create an image; hence
allowing the consumers to know the company’s advocacies and product features.
Furthermore, E(vergreen) Co. also aims to attract established construction
companies to utilize the product on their projects given the said product’s
features.

4. The information technology department will manage a website and oversee all
the information on the digital world. Along with the marketing team, the IT
department is also responsible for company exposure online and the formation of
creative publication materials. A few disadvantages of this would be potential
bugs that can cause the website to malfunction, lack of buyer warranties, and
slow delivery times. If these bugs are not fixed within a few days, it could
significantly cause the company negative effects. For instance, if a consumer
does not have access to the product page, their inclination to purchasing the item
will decrease promptly. On top of that, slow delivery issues could also affect the
buying decision of the consumer since eco-bricks are typically sold in bulk.
Additionally, the lack of buyer warranties could also cause the customer to doubt
the quality of the product. All things considered, the information technology
department should make sure that all the technology-based platforms are fully
operational and everything runs smoothly.

5. Finally, the Finance Department would mostly rely on technology to cater to their
needs. Similar to the IT department, the Finance Department would use various
technologies to any finance-related data and work to maximize efficiency.
However, it can be prone to hacking and without proper security; thus data can
breach anywhere and it could cause big losses for the company. Another
disadvantage is that it is complex since most people are accustomed to the
traditional way of handling finance-related activities, there would be people who
would not know what to do if glitches happened even if with prior training.

Value Loop

The figure above shows the role of the external environments to the
manufacturing process of eco-bricks specifically how the resources are acquired from
them as well as its effects and contributions to the said environments. Similarly, the
possible obstacles that can occur before the construction process and the factors that

managers should consider when selling outputs to customers are presented on the
broken lines in the opposite direction. With this, E(vergreen) Co. is prepared for
necessary factors that could hinder the sales and manufacturing process; thus allows the
organization to value each of every constituent.

5. Corporate Social Responsibility

In terms of the well-being of the employees, E(vergreen) Co.’s process of building

eco-bricks does not need special skills, highly mechanized machines, nor much time. Given this,
the workers on the eco-brick hubs will have a flexible work schedule that will enable them to
work when they want and need to, given that they complete the set number of hours they have
to be working in a week. This will enable them to earn a stable income while having sufficient
time to spend with family, improve their physical and mental health conditions, and even to
acquire a second job if need be. Aside from this, both workers and employees will be granted
the full privilege of health insurance, paid leaves including being excused for mental health
concerns, and quarterly medical check-up. On top of that, E Co. also ensures that the members’
welfare is properly fostered by holding monthly town hall meetings between the board of
directors and the employees of each department, discoursing on what has transpired the past
month and department’s future plans. There will also be a general assembly twice a year that
will adapt the concept of team building which will serve as a celebratory gathering for all the
workers and employees where they will be awarded for their accomplishments. This will help in
reinforcing employees with actions and contributions vital for the success of the organization
and it helps build employee motivation and engagement (Heathfield, 2019).

E(vergreen) Co. contributes to the overall well-being of the society by enabling the
employment of people from various societal sectors including persons with disabilities, senior
citizens, and people from the locality where an eco-brick hub is built. The company also brings
pride to the country through its innovative product that helps in solving the waste problem, aside
from this, the business also contribute to the overall economic productivity through the
circulation of money, from owners to investors, salaries given to employees and the money
used to consume goods. Other than these, E(vergreen) Co. also hold an annual event headed
by a special committee of employed senior citizens and persons with disabilities for their benefit
and of their community.

As numerously mentioned, E(vergreen) Co.’s ecobricks are made from shredded

laminated plastics mixed with cement. Plastics are one of the primary sources of pollution
bearing a negative impact on the ocean and the well-being of the wildlife (Ritchie and Roser,
2018). Manufacturing these products will lessen the improper disposal of plastic and provide a
sustainable way to recycle the non-biodegradable product. Furthermore, because the process
will be done in a systematic and standardized manner, the overall plastic waste will be lessened
by a substantial amount. As such, E(vergreen) Co. is able to commit to sustainable
development and growth of not just in a local or national level but can also be further practiced
internationally.

6. Management Functions

In accomplishing the work, all the members of the group started off with
brainstorming method as the planning function in coming up with several ideas they can
use to make the final topic. At first, there was a difficult time finding an appropriate
company to focus on since there was a frequent clashing of thoughts. Ideas did not
come out fully organied; hence the group put all the ideas together to come up with a
decision. In the end, the group has chosen Eco-Bricks to be the final project as agreed
upon by the majority.

In the leading function, every member is a leader of their own. Everyone made
sure they are working on their corresponding parts of the paper. Angelica was the one
who continuously reminded the members of the group about the target time and the
limitations of the paper so that everyone is kept on the right track. She initiates the
whatever changes needed in anticipation of possible errors that may appear in the
paper. Moreover, other members did their part in helping and motivating each other to
comply with the requirements on time. They also had the authority in making decisions
with the paper since everyone holds responsibility for the work project. With this,
communication played an important role in making the paper as all members must have
an understanding of what the paper is all about.

Management of Organizations E(vergreen) Co.
Advocates for the Environment

As of the organizing function of management, each member of the group is

assigned to work on certain parts of the paper. The Company Background was assigned
to Rianne Garcia and Angelica Mendoza. The Strategic Movement of the company was
handled by Sabin Tan and Theodore Villaseñor. With Value Loop & Corporate Social
Responsibility, Gabriel Jocson and Franz Bayron made sure it was well-organized.
Darwin Loyola took care of the Management Functions and everyone was delegated to
work on Programs for PWD & Senior Citizens. Also, each part has its designated target
time to accomplish the work. This simply shows an appropriate task distribution as a way
to run the organizing function of management.

For Controlling, all members were encouraged to provide feedback or comments

on every part of the paper. This feedback control method enabled the members to lay
out a sight of improvement for the work done, hence avoiding errors or further
complications for the overall conception of the paper. With the use of feedback control,
all members knew the right information to put without actually contradicting the other
details in the paper. This helped the group create a predetermined metrics and
standards to meet the project’s goals.
