A.Definition of Geometry
Geometry is a branch of mathematics concerned
with questions of shape, size, relative position of
figures, and the properties of space.
A mathematician who works in the field of
geometry is called a geometer. And it is the branch
of mathematics concerned with the properties and
relations of points,lines,surfaces,solids, and higher
dimensional analogs.
B.Describe the Undefined Terms
1.)Point
In modern mathematics, a point refers usually to
an element of some set called a space. More
specifically, in Euclidean geometry, a point is a
primitive notion upon which the geometry is built,
meaning that a point cannot be defined in terms of
previously defined objects. And a point is when two
line meet each other
2.)Line
A line is an identifiable path created by a point
moving in space. It is one-dimensional and can vary
in width, direction, and length. Lines often define
the edges of a form. Lines can be horizontal,
vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or
thin.
3.)Plane
In mathematics, a plane is a flat, two-dimensional
surface that extends infinitely far. A plane is the
two-dimensional analogue of a point (zero
dimensions), a line (one dimension) and three-
dimensional space.
C.Define and Illustrate
1.)Segment
In mathematics, a plane is a flat, two-dimensional
surface that extends infinitely far. A plane is the
two-dimensional analogue of a point (zero
dimensions), a line (one dimension) and three-
dimensional space.
2.)Ray
In geometry, a ray is a line with a single endpoint
(or point of origin) that extends infinitely in one
direction.
3.)Parallel Lines
In geometry, parallel lines are lines in a plane
which do not meet; that is, two lines in a plane that
do not intersect or touch each other at any point
are said to be parallel. By extension, a line and a
plane, or two planes, in three-dimensional
Euclidean space that do not share a point are said
to be parallel.
4.)Intersecting Lines
Intersection. From Latin: inter - "between" ,
secare "to cut," Definition: The point where
two lines meet or cross. Try this Drag any orange
dot at the points A,B,P or Q.
The line segments intersect at point K
5.)Perpendicular Lines
In elementary geometry, the property of
beingperpendicular (perpendicularity) is the
relationship between two lines which meet at a
right angle (90 degrees). The property extends to
other relatedgeometric objects. A line is said to
be perpendicularto another line if the
two lines intersect at a right angle.
