Government of Chhattisgarh, Raipur.INTRODUCTION
Boiler as a steam generator is an integral system of a thermal power
station. India continues to depend largely on thermal route for its electricity
generation. In addition to the utility boilers meant for power generation, there
are large numbers of process steam boilers too. The components of a boiler
mainly the pressure parts are continuously subjected to high temperature and
pressure throughout their service life. Failure of any component while running
not only leads to the loss of power generation, it poses threat to the safety of the
surrounding working personnel. Thus safe running of a boiler is of prime
importance. Healthiness of a boiler with respect to its fitness for the purpose is
monitored by the Government statutory body like Inspectorate of Boilers on a
regular basis. Condition assessment of the boiler pressure parts through
Remnant Life Assessment (RLA) study is carried out to ascertain the healthiness.
Based on the assessment report the Memorandum of Inspection Book of the
respective boiler is updated by the concerned Inspectorate of Boilers.
Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) setup in 1960 by the Government
of India, functions asa National organization for applied research in power sector
and also serves as an independent laboratory for testing and certification of
power equipment. CPRI is a member of STL (Short Circuit Testing Liaison) of
Europe. CPRI also provides consultancy services on various facets of power
sector.
CPRI has several research laboratories and testing facilities across the
country engaged in different specialized fields. One such laboratory namely
Thermal Research Centre (TRC) at Koradi, Nagpur, MS has been providing
generation related services in the areas of condition monitoring, renovation,
modernization and life extension of power plant equipments through diagnostic
and life extension studies for achieving economy and reliability in power systems
over past two decades. Amongst its technical activities, TRC has successfully
carried out Remnant Life Assessment (RLA) studies of more than 100 utility
boilers of capacities ranging from 50 to 500 MW for both State Electricity Boards
(SEB) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). The RLA study is
conducted as per the laid down stringent guidelines of Indian Boiler Regulation
(IBR). It is worth mentioning here that CPRI, TRC has achieved the prestigious
recognition of “Well known Remnant Life Assessment Organisation’ by the
Central Boiler Board (CBB), New Delhi.
In the light of the above, CPRI, TRC, Nagpur in association with the Boiler
Inspectorate Chhattisgarh, Raipur is conducting a two-day workshop on
Remnant Life Assessment (RLA) study of boilers to bring in a focused awareness
amongstthe stake holders.THEME OF THE WORKSHOP:
There are various types of damage
mechanisms prevailing in a boiler, Prominent
amongst those are corrosion, erosion, hydrogen
damage (embrittlement), short term over
heating, creep etc. Boiler tube leakages occur due
to any of these mechanisms. Periodic assessment
of the boiler pressure parts helps in preventing
forced outages, improving availability, proactive
maintenance planning.
Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR) 1950
stipulates guidelines for conducting RLA study of boiler. Condition assessment of
pressure parts is carried out by deploying specific Non-destructive Test (NDT)
methods specified therein.
In this workshop, it has been planned to discuss
the followingtopics.
+ Philosophy of Remnant Life Analysis (RLA)-an
Introduction
+ Damage Mechanisms of boiler pressure parts
+ Amendments in Indian Boiler Regulation (IBR)
Act 1923 and Regulations 1950
+ Methodology for carrying out RLA study
