Friday, January 24th, 2014
From 9pm to 3am
The Paper Box, 17 Meadow Street, Brooklyn, NY 11206
DubStuy Records and Deadly Dragon Sound are excited to present UK legend and 2010 RBMA
Culture Clash winner Channel One Sound System for the second edition of The Roots of Sound
System. This quarterly party brings together topselectors and sound systems from around the world to
showcase a specific style of Jamaican music on the most appropriate format: DubStuy’s handcrafted
15,000W speaker stack. This ‘Roots & Culture’ edition will focus on roots reggae and UK dub with each
performer digging deep into their vaults, playing some of their most vital records and rare dubplates. In
addition to Channel One, the lineup features New York’s own Tony Screw a.k.a. Downbeat the Ruler,
host emcee Screechy Dan, and both Deadly Dragon and DubStuy’s crew.
Channel One Sound System has spent the past 30 years solidifying their reputation as one of world’s
heaviest hitting roots reggae sounds. Selector Mikey Dread and his brother Trevor grew up in the sound
system business. Their father, who ran the ADMIRAL BAILEY sound system in Jamaica and then Britain
in the 1950s and 1960s, passed the mantle to them in 1979. They christened their new sound as
CHANNEL ONE, in homage to the famous Jamaican Label of the same name, and began selecting at
underground “Blues” parties in London. Over the past decades, Channel One has been instrumental in
the preservation and development of Sound System culture in the UK, inspiring an entire new generation
of sound systems while influencing the evolution of some of its descendents such as dubstep and
jungle among others. Their yearly Notting Hill Carnival appearance has become an institution and they
have taken their positive message throughout the UK, Europe, South America and finally, on January
24th, to the USA.
Since the early 70’s, Tony Screw, a.k.a. Downbeat the Ruler, has been entertaining and educating
crowds, from Brooklyn to Berlin, with his inimitable blend of stage presence, exclusive dubplates and a
second sense for keeping a dance floor packed. Named in honor of Tony Screw’s musical mentor Sir
Coxsone Dodd, Downbeat the Ruler Sound has introduced generations of reggae fans to the sounds of
Studio One, the blueprint of Jamaican music.
New Yorkbased sound system and record shop Deadly Dragon Sound System has been selecting
and sharing their love of Jamaican music since 1995. Featuring Selectors Scratch Famous, JD, Queen
Majesty and Mr. K., Deadly Dragon Sound continues to be a force in the reggae community as
selectors, retailers, radio hosts and collectors of reggae music from the foundation of Ska all the way up
to the newest riddims bubbling up from the yard.
DubStuy Records is a Brooklynbased record label dedicated to promoting bass music and Sound
System culture in NYC and beyond. Through their music productions and custombuilt 15,000 watt
sound system nicknamed the “Tower of Sound”, DubStuy brings together the communities of reggae
dub, bass music, and hiphop. The team behind the label has produced events as Sound Liberation
Front since 2007, including the Dub Invasion Festival in 2011 and the Coney Island Reggae Beach
Party.
