❖ This is an individual task

Reference:

Few things to remember

1) The pressure in gases is due to the number of collisions of gas particles with
the walls of the container
2) Temperature is an indicator of the average KE of particles and thus their
speed.
3) The behavior of gas is studied with reference to 3 variables (Pressure,
Volume, and temperature) and their co-dependance.
Task:

Aim: Investigate the effect of changing P, V and/or T on the behavior of Ideal

gas

P = Pressure exerted by the gas

V = Volume of the gas
T = Thermodynamic temperature of the gas

❖ Remember to click on ‘width’ if changing volume

❖ You may choose to select different particles and compare and contrast the
results.

Aim: Investigate the changing pressures in an ideal gas, by changing the volume of
the ideal gas; keeping the thermodynamic temperature of the gas constant.

Variables:
IV: Volume of the gas
DV: Pressure exerted by the gas
Controlled: Thermodynamic temperature of the gas

Hypothesis:
Statement: pressure in gases is due to the number of collisions of gas particles with
the walls of the container, therefore we notice that when the volume changes, the
particles collide with the walls more often, increasing the pressure.Keeping in mind
the temperature is constant.
The absolute pressure exerted by a given mass of an ideal gas is inversely
proportional to the volume it occupies if the temperature and amount of gas remain
unchanged within a closed system.

 = kV
Mathematical: P
PV = k

Graphical: Straight line graph

Raw Data:
Number of particles - 250 light particles
Volume (nm) Lowest Pressure (atm) Highest Pressure (atm)
15.0 19.1 19.9
12.0 24.0 24.7
9.0 31.9 32.7
6.0 48.5 49.1
Processed data:
Volume Lowest Highest Average PV = k
(nm) Pressure Pressure Pressure (proof)
(atm) (atm) (atm)
15.0 19.1 19.9 19.5 15 x 19.5 =
292.5
12.0 24.0 24.7 24.4 12 x 24.4 =
292.8
9.0 31.9 32.7 32.3 9 x 32.3 =
290.7
6.0 48.5 49.1 48.8 6 x 48.8 =
292.8

Uncertainty in k → (max - min)/2 → 292.8-290.7/2 → +1.05

Graph:
Straight line graph, passes through the origin, with constant gradient k
X axis = Volume x A(constant area)
Y axis = Average pressure

Interpretation from the data table and graph:

Conclusion: (Statement, mathematical and graphical)
The hypothesis is right as the calculated value of k is constant within its uncertainty,
therefore we can conclude that pressure and volume are inversely proportional.
The above processed data proves the point made

Molecular explanation for the relationship:

As the width is reduced, the volume decreases due to the constant cross section
area(A), this makes the particles collide with the walls of its container more often,
hence increasing the pressure. At any given time, the number of particles hitting the
wall is different, therefore causing changing pressure values as seen above.
