Matter and Its Classification

Matter is
-anything that occupies space
- has 3 states,
- changes in many forms such as physical or chemical change

Physical Change- Chemical composition of the substance is unchanged.

- Changes from one phase to another.
Chemical Change- Chemical composition of the substance does change.
- Entirely new substance with new bonds.

Pure Substance- A substance is one that can't be separated from other materials by any physical
process. It can be an element or a compound. An example is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

An element can't be broken down into other materials by physical or chemical means.

Compound-

A mixture is made up of two or more pure substances which can be separated by physical means. It can
be either homogeneous or heterogeneous.

What is a homogeneous mixture?

A homogeneous mixture is when all substances distribute equally and every section looks the same. An
example is alcohol and water.

What is a heterogeneous mixture?
