MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES

PROBLEM SET 1

1. For the section shown in the figure below, calculate the (a) coordinates of the centroid 𝐶(𝑥̅ , 𝑦̅) with respect to
point O and (b) moment of inertia 𝐼𝑥 and 𝐼𝑦

2. Calculate the stresses in members CE, DE, and DF for the truss shown in the figure below. Indicate whether tension
(T) or compression (C). The cross-sectional area of all members is 1.8 in2. Also, determine the factor of safety (FS)
if the strength is 36ksi.

3. For the section shown in the figure below, calculate the shearing stress in the 20mm-diameter pin at B. The
support at C is roller.
(Tips: Shear force τ is the resultant of pin/hinge reactions. Consider if single or double shear)

4. Two blocks of wood, both having width of 100m and thickness of 50mm, are glued together along the joint inclined
at an angle θ = 50o as shown in the figure below. If a tensile force P = 80kN is applied, determine the normal and
shearing stresses.

5. In the clevis shown in the figure below, a force P = 16kips is applied. Calculate the minimum bolt diameter
without exceeding a shearing stress of 12ksi. Also, compute for the minimum thickness of each yoke without
exceeding a bearing stress of 20ksi. (Tip: use the solved bolt diameter to get the thickness)
