SAND

1.MOISTURE CONTENT

01.APPARATUS

 Oven
 Balance
 Scoop
 Trays

02.PROCEDURE

Prepare the sample of 200g, 250g, 300g,and take the mass mw

Dry the sample in oven for 24 hours time; at 105°c-110°c temperature

After, remove the sample and weigh it; and take the mass mc

03.RESULTS

The moisture content of sand is expressed as flows

W=Mw-Mc×(expressed in %)
Mc

Where Mw: Mass of wet sand

Mc: Mass of dried sand

04.DATA COLLECTION

2.BULK DENSITY

01. APPARATUS

 Cylindrical metal measure, 1 dm3 capacity

 Balance &Oven
 Trays & Scoop

02. PROCEDURES

Dry the sand sample in the oven for 24 hours time at1050C-1100C

Choose the cylindrical metal measure of mass Mc and volume of Vc

Fill the dried sample in the cylinder

Weigh the cylinder containing the sample and take the mass M

03. RESULTS

The Bulk density of sand is expressed as follows

Φo = M-Mc (kg/dm3) Where M=mass of cylinder containing the sand

Vc Mc=mass of empty cylinder
Vc=volume of cylinder

3. SPECIFIC GRAVITY

01. APPARATUS

 Graduated and transparent cylinder

 Balance
 Oven
 Scoop trays
 Sieve of 200 micrometer

02. PROCEDURE

 Dry the sample for 4 hours time

 Sieve the sample with 200 micrometer diameter sieve
 Weigh 10-50g of the sample and take the mass M
 Pouring the clean water until the half of measuring cylinder ,and take volume V1
 Slowly put the sample in cylinder containing the water
 Shake the cylinder and rest it for 10-15 minutes time
 Read the level of water and take the volume V2

03.RESULTS

The specific gravity is expressed as follows

Φo= M (g/ml)
V2-V1
Where M=mass of sand sample
V1=volume of water before pouring the sand
V2= volume of water after pouring the sand

5. DUST CONTENT
01. APPARATUS

Graduated and transparent measuring cylinder

Oven & balance

Timer, trays & Scoop

02.PROCEDURE

Dry the sand sample in oven for 24hours time.

Remove the sand and weigh 500g of dried sample; Take the Mass Mo.

Pouring the water and the sand in the cylinder such that there is 20 cm height of water above the top
surface of sand.

Rest the cylinder for 5-10 minutes time.

NB: Repeat the procedure until the water become clean for the same sample.

If the water becomes very clean, then wash the sand and dry it in oven for 24 hours time,at 105 0C-1100C
temperature

After, remove the sand and weigh it, take the mass M1

03. RESULTS

The dust content is expressed as follows

Op=M0-M1 X 100 (Expressed in %)

M0

Where M0=Mass of sand before washing

M1=Mass of sand washing and drying
