STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT2005 Chevrolet Aveo
2005 STEERING Steering Wheel & Column - Aveo
Removal Procedure
NOTE:
NOTE:
Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Notice in Cautions
and Notices.
Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, the
column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the
column assembly on the end could collapse the steering
shaft or loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column
rigidity. Leaning on the column assembly could cause the
jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could
impair the columns collapsible design. Do NOT hammer on
the end of the shaft, because hammering could loosen the
plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. If you need
to remove the steering wheel, refer to the Steering Wheel
Replacement procedure in this section.
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and
Notices.
IMPORTANT: Remove the steering column only if:
« The steering column requires replacement.
« The steering and the ignition lock housing require
replacement.
« Another operation requires the removal of the steering
column.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and let the vehicle sit for 1 minute to deactivate
the air bag.
2. Remove the tum signal switch. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal Switch

INFLATABLE RESTRAINT STEERING WHEEL MODULE COIL CENTERING2005 Chevrolet Aveo
2005 STEERING Steering Wheel & Column - Aveo
Fig, 29: Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System Clock Spring Centered
Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
CAUTION: When servicing the steering column, the Supplemental
Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System clock spring must be
centered for proper steering wheel operation. Failure to
properly center the SIR clock spring may result in
reduced turnability of the steering wheel causing the
vehicle to improperly maneuver and may cause the SIR
system to be inoperative.
NOTE: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the
steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected.
This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering
column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it
may be damaged during vehicle operation.
Turn the front wheels straight ahead.
Tur the lobe of the clock spring clockwise to lock. Do not force.
Turn the lobe of the clock spring counterclockwise approximately 3 turns to the neutral2005 Chevrolet Aveo

position, with the front of the wheels straight ahead.
4, Properly align the pointed marks on the components of the clock spring.
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
CAUTION: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in Cautions and
Notices.
CAUTION: In order to ensure the intended function of the steering
column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid
personal injury to the driver, perform the following:
« Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you
tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to
do this can damage the steering column.
« Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified
torque. Overtightening the upper steering column
fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.
NOTE: Refer to Steering Wheel Straight and Column Locked Notice in
Cautions and Notices.
NOTE: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Notice in Cautions and
Notices.
In addition to the steering function, the steering column provides safety and security
The energy-absorbing column is designed to compress in a front-end collision to lessen the
chance of driver injury
The ignition switch and the lock are mounted on the column, allowing the ignition and
steering operations to be locked to prevent theft of the car.
The column levers trigger the turn signals, the headlight beams, and the windshield washer
and wipers.
IMPORTANT: Apply a thin coat of lithium grease to all friction points when
reassembling to ensure proper operation.
A tilt steering column uses a spherical joint to allow the steering wheel to tilt up and down.
This enables the driver to adjust the steering wheel to a comfortable driving position.2005 Chevrolet Aveo
