Renewable Energy Resources

1. What is demand-side management (DSM)?
Demand-side management known by its acronym DSM is a systematic approach to the
administration of producing and selling electricity in which the electric utility actively manages
demand for electricity, rather than assuming it’s demand beyond its control. Demand Side
Management (DSM) is also known as a group of actions to manage the energy consumption with
the aim of administrating the utility of electricity. It is important to mention that the information
was taken from the next source [1].
2. List 4 ideas/examples to implement DSM
Some examples of DSM implementation are:

 Remote controlled devices attached to air conditioners to offset spikes in demand

 Improving the efficiency of energy-using appliances
 MISO participation: Open-access transmissions service and monitoring the high
voltage transmission system
 Renewable Energy Resources

3. What are challenges for DSM in developing countries? How would you solve those
challenges? Support your idea with a diagram of the involved system (use boundary,
arrows).
Some challenges for the DSM implementation in developing countries might be, like in Ecuador,
the subsidies, the government policies and the level of education. The subsidies are like a barrier
for renewable energy resources and for the demand on electricity. For instance, in Ecuador the
electricity is subsidized reason why people don’t care about energy consumption and demand.
Meanwhile, the government that do not help on the establishment of a good energy efficiency
policies for the houses, industries and commercial entities are a constant problem too because
of the high consumption on electricity. The energy consumption in the underdeveloped
countries is high because the society is not well informed about the significant importance of
energy savings. Another challenge might be the lack of technology. The way I would solve those
challenges is by implementing by the government policies, stablish policies for the enterprises to
make an Energy management system, and eradicate the subsidies. The graphics was obtained
from [1].
