Q1 (12-13): How is GE changing its business strategy
and business model? What is the role of information
technology in GE’s business? GE is focusing on a
much more technology-centered business strategy
and model. GE is selling off their division that makes
refrigerators and microwaves along with a majority
of GE Capital financial services. They are shifting
focus on their generators, jet engines, automobiles,
and oil-refining equipment and software with focus
on connecting these different devices to their cloud
network. GE is putting money into technology that
will help control and monitor industrial machines
and then putting out software that allows for
analysing data from cloud services that these
machines are connecting. GE is hoping to turn into a
major competitor in the software realm of
information technology.
Q2 (12-14): On what business functions and level of
decision making is GE focusing? GE has placed a
focus on data that is generated by sensors placed on
industrial machines in order to help their customers
monitor equipment performance. This information is
able to help predict and prevent breakdowns and
continuously asses the health of the machines in real-
time.
