As of 1 January to 29 June 2019 456 deaths have been officially reported

due to the recent dengue outbreak. The current dengue incidence is 85% higher
than the year 2018. And the case fatality rate is 0.43% as of 29 June 2019, despite
being lower than the previous year 2018 (0.55%) is still above the regional
average (0.22%) in the Western Pacific.

The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) urges the DOH branches to

improve dengue surveillance, case management and outbreak response
campaigns and etc.

Dengue is caused by four types of viruses carried by mosquitoes that thrive

in grimy environment standing water. Although it is important to clean the habitat
where their eggs are lain and clean their surroundings in general, people prefer
commercial mosquito repellents, that contains DEET (N,N-Diethyl-3-
methylbenzamide), risks could include an itchy or swollen rash and is slightly toxic
to birds, fish and aquatic vertebrates.

The use of synthetic insecticides to control vector mosquitoes has caused

physiological resistance and adverse environmental effects in addition to high
operational cost. Insecticides of botanical origin have been reported as useful for
control of mosquitoes. Leucaena glauca Linn has shown a variety of insecticidal
properties.

Numerous plant products have been reported either as insecticides for

killing larvae adult mosquitoes or as repellents for mosquito biting and are one of
the best alternatives for mosquito control. Ipil-Ipil trees, (Leucaena glauca Linn).
are small tree growing up 8 meters high. They are settled in areas at low and
medium altitudes throughout the Philippines. It is locally gregarious and
abundant. It is introduced from tropical America. Leaves and seeds contain lipids,
crude protein and carbohydrates. Seeds contain tannin and oxalic acid. Kernel
contains oil, 17-20%. Leaves and seeds yield toxic and non-protein substance
called mimosine. Study for secondary metabolites yielded compounds including
four steroids, triterpenoid, and two benzenoids. The present research discusses
the potential of aqueous extract of the leaves of Leucaena glauca Linn as ovicidal
and larvicidal agent on Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes.
