Hi there!
I’m the author of the Clutter-Free Classroom Blog
which was created to save teachers time and money
through improved classroom organization and
management. Clutter-Free Classroom began as an
extension of the work I was doing consulting with new and
seasoned teachers. During my sessions I would share tips
on classroom organization and help them to design and
decorate their classrooms for the new school year. After
my son was born I started a blog to extend the work I was
doing beyond my local area to everywhere the internet
reaches. What began as a hobby to fill the hours the baby
napped has grown into so much more than I could have
imagined.
My Clutter-Free Guide to Organizing Your Classroom
is the top-selling product in my Teacher Store and has even
been a number one seller for the entire Teachers Pay
Teachers website. In that ebook I explain how to declutter
and set up a classroom and provide tips for keeping it
organized throughout the year. I wrote this Classroom
Decorating Guide as a follow up to it. It is the perfect
companion guide to use after you have organized your
space and are ready to decorate the classroom. Inside you
will find a collection of photos and ideas that will help you
transform any space into a beautiful learning environment
that you will be proud to call your second home. The best
part of all is that it can all be done on a tight budget!

The Six Steps of
Classroom Decor
and Design

Step-By-Step Classroom Decor
Step 1: Clear the Space
If you are doing a complete classroom makeover, it is often
best to start with a blank slate. Remove all current decor to
create a canvas on which to work.

I also recommend decluttering the classroom by removing

any unnecessary items.

Step 2: Arrange the Room

Determine your floor plan and layout. Arrange the space.
Decide what you want to display and where it will be placed
(calendar, word wall, math, vocabulary, etc)
Details, tips, photos and ideas for decluttering and setting up a classroom
space can be found in The Clutter-Free Guide to Organizing Your
Classroom and also on my daily blog, The Clutter-Free Classroom.

Step 3: Start with the Basics

It’s easy to go overboard when decorating a classroom.
This can be prevented by starting the transformation in the
spaces that MUST be decorated such as mounted bulletin
boards or any area that is an absolute eyesore (i.e. stained,
chipped, dirty walls or things that a previous teacher (or
yourself) has covered with ugly, pattered contact paper,
etc). Since covering these is a bit of a necessity, I find them
to be the best places to begin. That way you can gauge how
much more to decorate and add as you continue.
Use the tips found throughout this guide to pick a cohesive
color scheme, back your bulletin boards, add trim and
lettering. Take a look at the space. See how the colors flow.
Step 4: Neutralize the Furniture/Storage Systems
Now that you’ve “put the first coat on your blank canvas”
it’s time to make sure the accent pieces within the
classroom do not take away from the complementary
backdrop you’ve just created. As you read through this guide
and The Clutter-Free Classroom Blog you’ll learn how you
can transform mismatched furniture and storage
containers so that they flow with your decor instead of
sticking out and causing a visual distraction.
Step 5: Add in the Useful Touches
There are several items that are found in many classrooms
that are not necessarily mandatory, but that are useful.
Curtains cut down glare. Area rugs define spaces and
provide comfort when working on the floor. Pillows give
kids the chance to curl up with a book. Lamps provide a soft
glow and an increased level of comfort and relaxation.
Each of these items also provide the opportunity to enhance
your classroom theme or color scheme.
Step 6: Add in the Fun Stuff
These are the things that certainly are not necessary in a
learning space, but that take the decor to the next level.
This includes things like tissue poms, lanterns, flowers,
pennants, garland. This can be where you take it too far. Be
sure to take a good look at your space before introducing
decorative detail and be critical about each new addition.

Decorating on a Budget
Tips and Tools to Use
Decorating your classroom can be very expensive, but it
certainly doesn’t have to be. By being creative in the materials
you use you’ll be able to assemble a cohesive and beautiful space
for very little money.
Here are some of my favorite “decorating tools” that will
transform a space on a tight budget. By pairing them with any
of my affordable Mix and Match Classroom Essentials Bundles
(which provides you with 33 products for less than a quarter each
(including editable files) you can complete your classroom for
less than $50.00

Most of the items I am going to feature can be found at chain

craft stores such as AC Moore and Michaels. Both offer a
teacher discount that can be used in conjunction with coupons
and sales...and there are ALWAYS coupons for 40-50% off.

RIBBON: The colors and patterns are

endless. It can be bought super-cheap.
It adds fabulousness and a finishing
touch to EVERYTHING! Use it as a
border around posters, charts,
windows, door frames and more.

Tips and Tools to Use
SCRAPBOOK PAPER: If you are
using a color scheme or classroom
theme then scrapbook paper will be
your BFF. I personally super heart
the 12 x 12 scrap pads. This one is my
favorite. You'll see traces of it
everywhere in my room.

FABRIC...or more specifically BED SHEETS: Fabric has long

since been the only thing I back my bulletin boards with. I used to
buy yards and yards and yards of it.  Now, I will only buy bed
sheets. Not only are they much cheaper, but they come in really
fun bold colors (especially as the college kids get ready to head to
the dorms) AND
bonus...they often come
with a pillowcase, which
I use in the classroom on
standard pillows. The
kids love grabbing a
pillow to read with on
the floor.

SPRAY PAINT: Again-cheap
and easy.  The options of
colors are amazing. You'll find
any color you want and can
quickly transform Dollar Store
treasures into custom-
matched pieces for your room.
TISSUE PAPER: Again I must sing the praises of color and
texture.  Target is my favorite tissue
paper buying spot. There are tons of
online tutorials for making tissue poms.
They’re really easy. I made mine during
indoor recess with my 3rd graders.

STICKERS: I have and

use a Cricut, but
actually prefer fun,
colorful stickers since
they are easier to use
and are already, well,
sticky.

Color Schemes
How to Pick One
Choosing and committing to a color scheme for your classroom
can be challenging. It can also be a whole bunch of fun too. Here
are some tips to help you decide on the colors you want to use to
transform your space into something special:
An Accent Piece or Pattern
Do you have a large area rug that you adore for group area or
perhaps a sofa that you brought in to make your class feel more
homey? Look to the patterns within those items for inspiration.
Select two colors from within that design to use as your color
scheme.
School Colors
If your school has official school colors you could opt to use
them to decorate your classroom. If you don’t have colors
designated specifically to your elementary school perhaps you
could use the district’s high school colors.
Existing Furniture
If your desks and chairs are all red you may want to consider
selecting colors that don’t clash with them. Instead pick a color
scheme that complements the items in your classroom that can
not be changed.
Your Teaching Style and Philosophy
Think about the environment you want to create. Work with
colors that help set the stage. If you hope to have a calm and
relaxed classroom pick neutral colors found in nature. If you are
looking to create a room that is fun and energetic pick bright
colors and interesting patterns.

Color Schemes
How to Pick One
Use the Color Wheel
A color wheel will help you find colors that complement each other
and help you to better understand the relationship between hues.

Visit the Paint Section

Grab a bunch of those little
color swatches and mix and
match them to find colors you
like together. Also look to the
booklets they offer that show
color combos that have been
selected by the professionals.
Pin for the Win
Spend some time looking at
classrooms online and pin
images you find attractive on
a Pinterest Board. Then look
at the board in thumbnail view
to see what colors jump out
at you.

Use the 60-30-10 Rule

When decorating your classroom divide the color elements into
60 percent of your dominant color and 30 percent of your
secondary color. Fill the additional 10 percent with an accent
color such as black, white or brown.

Bulletin Boards
backgrounds
I always recommend covering the boards with a solid color. Try to
limit the colors. You can use butcher paper, wrapping paper, vinyl
table clothes, and shower curtain liners to cover the boards, but my
personal favorite is...

Fabric
Using fabric in place of paper to back
your bulletin boards has many
benefits...

✦much longer-lasting
✦can be folded and reused
✦easier to hang
✦the wrinkles can be ironed
✦doesn’t fade
✦so many color options

Fabric is such a great decorating tool. It provides texture, comfort,

and an element of “pop” to a classroom. While, I highly recommend
only using solid colored backgrounds on your bulletin boards, it’s fun
to bring some patterns into the classroom via fabulous fabrics that
feature your color scheme. Here’s some suggestions on how to use it:
✦pillowcases
✦table skirts for your teacher table
✦curtains
✦framed as a piece of wall art

Bulletin Boards

Papers
If you intend to use paper
to cover your bulletin board,
I highly suggest using
fadeless paper or giftwrap.
Both are more vibrant and
resist looking worn from
the sun or classroom
lighting much better than
the butcher paper that many
schools provide.

Likewise, if you are

mounting papers or posters
my recommendation is that
you use card stock as
opposed to construction
paper for the same reason.

borders and trims
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to bulletin
board trim. Sure, there are tons of wonderful choices of
traditional manufactured options available, but there are also so
many other things that can be used as well...especially if you are
trying to stick to a tight budget.

Bulletin Boards
borders and trims
If you are using traditional borders and trim...

Limit the Styles:

Stick to only 2-3 colors
and designs throughout
the entire classroom.
When I first started
teaching I was obsessed
with borders. The cuter
they were, the harder
they were to resist. I
used as many kinds as I could fit in my classroom. YIKES! Talk
about a look that was not cohesive. Once you’ve picked your
color theme, stick to only 2-3 kinds of border throughout the
entire space.
Use Mostly Solid Colors:
Be sure to balance out any patterned trim you’ve picked with solid
colors. A good rule of thumb is one patterned trim choice with 2
solid colors to accent it. The patterned trim should be the same color
as one of the solids, but perhaps in a slightly different hue. If you
do prefer patterned borders, I encourage you to consider
working with the trims that are limited in color such as those
pictured above.
Layer the Trim:
Hanging more than one trim around a board creates visual
interest, better defines the space and, if your space is oversized,
helps to fill the area.

Bulletin Boards
words and phrases
To avoid crooked letters in your
bulletin board title, simply make
all of the letters crooked for an
intentional look.

Use dressmaker pins to

temporarily hold letters in place.
When they are positioned as
desired attach with staples and
remove pins.

To position your letters in a perfectly straight and evenly spaced

manner, follow these steps:
1. Adhere a strip of painter’s tape
to the back of a ruler or yardstick
with about 1cm sticking out over
the top.

2. Flip the ruler over and gently

attach the letters to the tape at
desired intervals.

3. Hold the ruler up to the bulletin board and staple the top of
each letter to the board.
4. Remove the ruler and tape and attach the letters at the
bottom as well.
Bulletin Boards
words and phrases
Print the entire title onto one sheet of paper and mount onto
colored paper for a couldn’t-possibly-be-any-easier method of
constructing a bulletin board.

When hanging individual letters, lay them all out in order. Count
the total number of letters and find the center letter. Hang that
first. Next, working from the inside to the outside, attach a
letter to the left of the center letter and then to the right.
Continue until the title is complete.

Take a photo of each bulletin board you create. This will make it
much easier to recreate it in future years. To simplify the
process even further, store all related items in a large zip-top
bag. You could even add a printout of the photo to the bag to make
it easy for a volunteer to hang the board for you next time.

Bulletin Boards
3-D Elements
Give your boards some extra pizzazz by attaching some
interesting 3D pieces that relate to the board. To avoid a
cluttered look in your classroom, this decorating strategy is best
reserved for hallway displays.

Some seasonal ideas include: Halloween masks, spider webs, fall

leaves, aprons/hats for Thanksgiving, mittens, New Year’s hats
and noisemakers, plastic flowers.

Other ideas: tissue pom poms, festive lights,

A trip down the aisles of the Dollar Store will generate ideas.

Make it Stick
Tips for Getting Things to Stay Up
Stapler:
Staples are my choice method of putting up items when the
surface they are being adhered to lends itself to stapling. I like
staples because they are cheap and readily available. Also, they
leave very little damage (if any) because there
are only 2 teeny-tiny holes made. Most
importantly they hold everything in place until
you decide to
take it down.

Clear Pushpins:
Pushpins are a strong way to attach things to a wall or bulletin
board. They leave a larger hole than a stapler, but still not too
noticeable. I recommend the clear pins as opposed to colored
because they don’t distract from your display.
Hot Glue Gun:
A hot glue gun is the answer to those extremely challenging
surfaces. You do need to use caution in regards to the surface
you are hanging things on, but on MOST surfaces hot glue will
peel right off without leaving a mark. Always be sure to test the
surface with a bit of glue first. This works best with metal and
wood.

TIP: Paper will tear when it has been hot glued. This can be
avoided by attaching a small piece of painter’s tape to the back of
the item you are hanging and putting the dot of glue directly onto
the tape.

Easy Hanging Tips
Use a glue gun or Superglue to
attach thumbtacks to pinch-
style clothespins. Push the tack
into your bulletin board and
use the clothespin to hang
student work.
Another idea is to hang ribbon,
string or twine to form a
“clothesline” and clip student
work up. I love how Casey from
Cute Classroom Creations has a
bowl of clothespins readily

Use Duct Tape to attach ziptop baggies together (the gallon-size

work best for this purpose). This will create a quilt-style display.
You can then insert student work into the bags. Now that there are
so many styles of tape available you can certainly make a quilt to
match your classroom color scheme or theme.

Easy Hanging Tips
Attach clear page protectors to the wall. Create a ribbon border
around each of them to hide the 3-hole punched section. Once they
are displayed you can change out student work, learning objectives
or directions by sliding them in and out of the page protectors.

Slide a paperclip
over the top of the
paper background
paper. To display
work simply slide
it under the
paperclip. This
makes changing
out the work a
simple task. I also
use this method to
change out my
daily / weekly
learning goals.

Making
Furniture and
Storage Systems
Cohesive

Furniture/Storage Tips
Mismatched furniture can make a room look cluttered and
disorganized. Simply painting the various pieces will provide a
more complimentary look. Use either spray paint or a brush/roller
to quickly transform odd pieces into a look that flows naturally.
Painting the furniture white or black creates a neat appearance
and allows you to
change out your
theme or color
scheme as desired
without needing to
repaint.

When buying containers

(plastic crates, dishpans,
containers with lids, etc)
select black or white
versions of each. You can
easily add color and visual
interest with labels, but the
solid colors will minimize
visual clutter and also
allow for easy changes
when you want to swap out
your color scheme for a
new one.
Furniture/Storage Tips
These desks were red and clashed with the color scheme in my
classroom. To remedy that situation, I used colorful Duck Tape to
make them match the decor. The best part is that the tape is easily
removable and any sticky residue can be washed away with
rubbing alcohol.

The dishpans shown to the right in

the above photo were all a pale blue
color. They were spray painted to
better match the other items
within the classroom

Furniture/Storage Tips
Look for ways to have your furniture play multiple roles. The
photo below shows a small group teaching area. It functions as
an area to work with guided reading groups. By using colored
ottomans as student seating and attaching a table skirt, the area
also serves the purpose of providing additional storage both in the
cubes and under the table. The ottomans and fabric additionally
add to the bright color scheme within the classroom

Behind the table there are four copy paper boxes tucked into the
shelves. The boxes were covered with bulletin board paper to
coordinate with the classroom. They function as cheap and
effective storage that does not distract from the classroom
decor.

Little Details
With Big Impact
Coordinate Clear Storage Containers
Clear storage boxes and drawers are great because they allow
you to see the contents without unstacking and opening them all.
The downside is that they allow you to see all the contents (which
can cause visual clutter). A simple,
cheap and easy way to remedy this is
to insert bulletin board trim that
coordinates with your classroom
color scheme into the container. If
you choose a trim that is not quite as
tall as the container you will still be
able to see what is inside, but the
visual clutter will be dramatically
decreased.

Open Shelves
One of the fastest and most effective ways to reduce visual clutter
in a classroom is to address the open shelving within the space. This
will also increase the cohesiveness of your classroom because it
presents opportunities to add more of your color scheme choices to
the space.
Whenever possible, hide the contents of the open shelves with
fabric. This presents the area as one solid space as opposed to a
mismatch of
colors, patterns,
images, and
general clutter
which can be
distracting to
student learning.

Open Shelves

Cover the Space with Poster Board:

Poster board can be used to create “panels” that cover an
open shelf, yet can easily be lifted to access the contents. This
is best used in areas that contain items that the teacher will
need to access, but that students do not. The added benefit to
this method of covering the shelves is that it also creates an
additional display space. In my classroom I used the area to
post my learning goals. I slid paperclips over the paper frames
and can easily change out the goals without needing to use
staples or other adhesives. This prolongs the life of the poster
board.
To create this look simply cut the poster board to size. Use tape
to create a “hinge” by putting half the length of the tape on the
top of the poster board and attaching the other half of the tape
to the top of the shelf.

Bookshelves
Fill the empty space at the top of shelves
with titles and interesting elements using
mini-clotheslines.

Adding strips of decorative tape or bulletin

board trim to the front of shelves adds color
and detail.

Turn plain old or mismatched bookshelves

from drab to fab by painting the shelves
and attaching coordinating scrapbook
paper onto the back of them. The colors
look fantastic popping out from behind
book baskets.

Homey Touches

Tables and Chairs http://atraveledteacher.blogspot.com/2013/07/chalkboard-table-class-sneak-peek.html

At the beginning of this ebook I mentioned how easy it is to

transform your space on the cheap and suggested paint as an
option.Enter Exhibit A. Amanda painted a garage sale coffee table
using a gorgeous aqua and chalkboard paint to create an adorable
table that gives her classroom a feeling of home. The polka dot
recliners are also an awesome touch.
Lamps
Not only do lamps add to the color and decor,
but they cast a much softer glow than the
overhead florescent lighting that most
classrooms have. At the very least, place one in
your workspace to create a relaxed feeling
when you are working after hours.

Purposeful Decor
Move Things Together
Most teachers would
instinctively position the
filing cabinet’s back to
the wall, but by pushing
two together and
decorating the front it
serves double duty and
looks great. The magnetic
surface can be used as a
bulletin board or as an
interactive work station.

http://sixthgradetales.blogspot.com/2013/08/classroom-setup-to-do-list.html

I invested in a big orange rug

and a pink chevron basket for my
classroom to complement the
bright color scheme that I used
this year. Both added pops of
color that enhanced the decor,
but more importantly, they
served a purpose in the space.
We use the rug as a gathering
space for our group lessons and
the children sit around the
perimeter. The basket is used to
store lunch boxes and is brought
to the cafeteria daily.

enough clearance from the heat of the light to avoid fire hazards.

Run a wire attached to eye hooks from one end of the classroom to
the other and use this as a clothesline for displaying work or
decorative elements.

Hold up lightweight streamers with a single staple or tack. Both

leave no noticeable damage as the holes are very tiny.

The Fun Stuff

Jill, a friend and coworker, used a solid color fabric of the same
color to cover her boards and divided them with complementary
borders. She then added pom poms to the board which creates
interest and provides depth to the board. This photo also models how
easy it is to display items using clothespins which allows her to
quickly swap out daily learning goals. You’ll also note that this
picture shows a title created by printing the words all at once and
layered card stock to create a border around the displayed signs.

Related Tip:
To color clothespins evenly clip them onto a string (I tied mine
between two trees) and use spray paint. By painting them while
they are hanging you’ll be able to coat the entire clip.

The Fun Stuff
Another one of my talented
coworkers/friends, Cheryl, has
this in the window of her
preschool classroom. She used
white tissue poms with colored
tulle. Behind the rainbow is a
picket fence attached to the
window. It looks fantastic in the
classroom, but also looks amazing
from outside the window. Since
her large window is closest to the
school entrance it certainly
creates a welcoming display for
all who enter.

Artificial flowers and plants add a

personal touch without the need
for watering and won’t cause
issues for children with allergies.

Whimsical Decorations
If space, time, and school codes allow, you may want to consider
adding some overside whimsical decorations that enhance your
theme or learning subjects. The photo above shows some of the
decorations I created for my son’s 7th birthday pARTy. I loved how
bright and colorful they
were and so I brought
them to school and
included them in my
classroom afterwards.
They were a fun addition
to our art center.

Little Details
and Misc. Tips
General Tips
Create a dramatic look by covering an entire wall from floor to
ceiling with fabric or paper. I have very high ceilings in my
classroom so I always cover the empty space above the bulletin
boards with paper and border. Be sure to fill areas like these with
things that will not need to be traded out throughout the school
year so you don’t find yourself climbing on chairs to change them
out. I always have
my kids paint self
portraits on the
first day and use
those on one wall
and large photos
of the students on
the other.
Always Mount Signs/Posters or Add a Border
Adding color around the items you display gives them a much
more finished look, provides opportunity to add color and shows
attention to detail. This can be achieved by placing your item over
another piece of paper or card stock or by using ribbon or bulletin
board trim. The calendar in the photo above has green ribbon
around it. The Classroom Management Hand Signal Signs below
have been mounted onto aqua cardstock that was outlined in
black.

Wrap Containers in Paper
Use paper that matches your
classroom theme or color scheme to
add flair to ordinary containers.

Alternatively, you could also spray

paint plastic containers to
coordinate with your classroom.
Large yogurt tubs are great for this
purpose.

Frame Your Door

Create a welcoming
entrance by framing the

Coordinate With Your Theme or Color Scheme

Once you have
finished your room
and the colors or
theme come
together, add extra
punches of pizzazz
by adding personal
items. This photo

and water glass that
accent the lime and
aqua color combos
found throughout
the space.

Classroom Themes
Classroom Themes are a fun way to decorate a classroom. They
allow teachers to have a focus and tie all components together.

You can choose a theme based on your region, interest, unit of study,
color focus, school-wide theme or just for fun.

I used to do a different theme every year and created all of my own

resources when doing so. I have blogged extensively about many
themes commonly selected by teachers. Be sure to check out my
blog, www.CFClassroom.com for lots more ideas and photos.
Simply type the theme name in the search box to locate the one you
are looking for. The next section of this eBook will highlight just a
few of the themes and provide you with some ideas to get started.

Please note: I have

recently created a
whole new line of
classroom themes
with editable files.
They are all
affordably priced and
include an AMAZING
amount of classroom
essentials to have your
room looking
fantastic. Be sure to
follow my store and /
or facebook page to
see when new themes
are released.
Apples Theme 5 tips to create an
Apple Theme
Classroom:
1. Round objects such as the paper
lanterns pictured below or red paper
plates can easily be transformed into
apples by adding leaves and a stem.
2. Denims look great paired with an apple
theme. In addition to fabric you can
find duct tape to use as a border on
charts, posters and bulletin boards as
well.
3. If you have a student of the day to
help with classroom jobs you can
refer to him as "The Apple a Day."
4. Red checkered tablecloths are readily
available at party stores and can be
used on an extra table to create
additional storage space below.
5. Create an interesting classroom
feature by twisting brown craft
paper (or even grocery bags inside
out) to for the branches of a tree.
Have each student make an apple to
hang on the tree.
