ghey WALKER PROCESS Proces®, Fau;pmeX i ns Dedicated to the Water and Wastewater Industry ROTOSEAL ROTARY DISTRIBUTORS INTRODUCTION Secondary treatment by the trickling filter process is a time proven and effective biological process for the reduction of pollutants. In this process, wastewater is distributed over rock or plastic media by a Rotary Distributor mechanism to assure uniform loading. The wastewater trickles, down through the media where it contacts biologi- cal growths that are attached to the media and which oxidize the pollutants in the waste liquor. The filter is equipped with an underdrain to collect and carry away filter effluent, sloughed solids and to provide for circulation of air through the media. The key to efficient filter operation is uniform ribution of wastewater over the media with me- chanically reliable equipment. Over the years Four 178 foot diameter 48 Inch masttub Rotary Disibulors were fur Walker Process has helped sustain the reliability of the trickling filter process by designing and building quality Rotary Distributors that last and last. With experience stretching back to the 19408, in over 1,000 installations, we have the track record to prove it. We have worked to improve our Rotary Distributor line to bring you better designs and more available sizes than ever before - to enable selection of the best mechanism for your needs. Each distributor we manufacture is custom de- signed to most efficiently and economically meet your specific operating requirements. The follow: ing pages will introduce you to our RotoSeal Ro- tary Distributor line. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Walker Process RotoSeal Rotary Distributors are used to provide a uniform hydraulic load over the surface of the filter media. Flow is introduced at the center of the filter bed through a column that manifolds the influent to the rotating arms which are fitted with orifices and spreaders. Spreaders are provided to distribute flow in the thinnest pos: sible sheet over the filter media. The mechanism is driven entirely by the reaction of the water jet flow- ing out of the orifices All center column designs use top mounted bearings between the stationary and rotating por- tions of the column. Either two or four arms may be used, depending upon flow volume and dosing time. On four arm machines, overflow controls may be used with high flow ranges andior low head con- ditions. Arms are supported by vertical truss rods with lateral stability provided by horizontal cable sway bracing. Center column assembly sizes are selected based on combined flow and head requirements. Whether the application is a standard or high rate application and whether or not recirculation is em- ployed affect the size selection and specific fea- tures of the distributor. Distributors are available with center column di- ameters from 8 to 48 inches and for bed diameters up to 250 feet or more. This broad range of column sizes enables our distributors to handle flows of less than 100 GPM with our eight inch column and Up to 20,000 GPM or more, depending on available head, with our 48 inch column. Two types of center column designs are available, mast and mast-tub, with application dependent on flow and bed size. FEATURES Mast type center columns are available from 8 to 20 inches in diameter. The mast type Rotary Dis- tributor is normally applied for relatively low flow rates and for the smaller bed diameters. The main support or upper bearing is located at the top of the stationary column to protect it from the spray and splash of the sewage and to provide for long bearing life. A large lower journal bearing Is provided for stability and is protected by multi- ple spring loaded neoprene mechanical seals which are capable of withstanding high hydraulic surges. ‘The manifold is designed to accept elther two or four pipe arms with a flexible joint connection that prevents excessive stress from being applied to the lower bearing due to any movement of the arm. ‘The stationary and rotating columns are conserva- tively designed to provide low stress levels. Mast-tub type center columns are available from 24 to 48 inches in diameter. The mast-tub Rotary Distributor is generally applied where flow rates exceed 5,000 GPM or where large bed diameters require a mast-tub design. Many of the old style mast-tub distributors uti- lized a turntable type bearing located just above the media. Frequent seal failure would expose these bearings to sewage and chronic mainte- nance problems would begin. As with our mast type design, we locate the main support bearing at the top of the column away from the sewage to avoid any such problem. ‘The mast-tub center column is furnished with a fabricated steel inlet and distribution tub rather than the completely enclosed cast iron manifold used on mast type units. The height of the tub is varied according to the required head. Most of the other features of the mast-tub center column are similar to the mast design with, of course, increased flow and load-carrying capacity. Both mast and mast-tub center columns are com- pletely shop assembled and provided with anchor- age leveling nuts for ease of installation. {5 russ nop Bol connection novATING STATIONARY oUUMN ‘ColuM MaNFOLD | ‘SEALS LOWER BEARING SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARING, TRUSS ROD CONNECTION —) ROTATING ‘COLUMN STATIONARY | ‘COLUMN TUB | seats: a bistRisuTOR aM cauine searing MAST-TUB TYPE Overflow controls are provided on four arm tributors where the flow range is high andlor where the available head is limited. Usually, itis desirable to use overflow controls where the flow range greatly exceeds 2:1. Overtlow controls will keep two arms distributing their full hydraulic load dur- ing low flow periods with the secondary arms com- ing into service at higher flows without signifi- cantly increasing the required head On rast type distributors, overflows consist of inverted weirs fabricated as a section of the sec- ondary arms as shown in the picture to the left. On mast-tub type distributors the overflow controls are an integral part of the center column itself. In this case, rectangular straight edge weirs inside the center column bring the secondary arms into service at higher flow rates. Orifices are spaced along the arms to provide proper flow distribution per unit area of the filter, surface for uniform hydraulic loading. This results in the relatively close spacing at the end of the arm as shown with spacing becoming wider as the center column is approached. Orifices are adjustable to permit field changes in opening size to accommodate variations from de- sign flow conditions. Spreader plates allow full view of the orifice for easy access and cleaning of, orifices. Orifices and spreader plates are normally fur- nished in noncorrosive cast aluminum. Orifices are also available in a nonmetallic material upon request. Distributor arms are fabricated of steel pipe sec- tions which are progressively reduced in diameter from the center column to the arm tip to maintain a nearly uniform velocity. Arm velocity is maintained near 4 FPS at maximum flow. Vertical truss rods and horizontal cable sway bracing are designed to resist all dead and live loads and are provided with tumbuckles to permit close leveling and align- ment. ‘Arms are provided with vents and flushing end gates to allow periodic flushing and cleaning SELECTION Selection of preliminary size may be made from the sizing chart shown below. Normally, overflow controls are used when flow range exceeds 2:1. If sufficient head is available, overflow controls may not be neces- sary.
