Damage to the equipment may occur if these instructions are not followed. Caution ‘Turnlock must be in upward position prior to unit insertion in tray. a. When inserting the VHF-251/251S/251E in its mounting tray, do not push on the electronic dis- play panel. To insert, place thumbs on bottom cor- ners and gently apply pressure until the rear con- neetors are properly mated. Using an Allen wreneh, twist the turnlock into position b. When removing the VHP-251/2518/251E from its mount, do not pull on top of the front panel. Grasp the unit by the frequency selector knobs and carefully pull out. ¢. The minimum wire size for +13.15-volt de lines is #20 AWG. a. Read all notes on drawings and intereonneets before installing units, e, Wires carrying alternator ripple current or 400-Hz current, if dressed close to the transceiver, may Revised 27 February 1981 section I I installation produce audible interference due to synthesizer modulation. f. Speaker wire, if dressed close to transceiver, may produce feedback how! due to synthesizer modula- tion, 24 INSTALLATION Warning In the interest of personal safety, itis reeom- mended that the aircraft battery master switeh be turned off to disconnect power to the equipment mount before any electronic equipment is removed from or installed in the aireraft. ‘The following installation procedures must be per- formed as described to ensure proper operation and performance. Any deviation from these instructions may result in reduced performance and/or damage to the equipment. 24.1 VHF+251/2518/251E Communications Transceiver a, The installation kit (CPN 628-5289-002) supplied with the VHP-251/2518/251B is required for in- stallation, Refer to figure 2-1. b. The VHF-251/251S/251E is rigidly mounted in the aireraft instrament panel. There are two methods that may be used for installing the mounting tray provided in the installation kit. Both methods posi- tion the tray with front edges extended through the panel cutout, but flush with the aireraft in- strument panel. Refer to figure 22 for panel- cutont dimensions c. Avoid mounting close to external heating sources. If this is unavoidable, use blower or ram air cool- ing. Under norma! installation eonditions, ram air or blower cooling will inerease reliability of the VHF-251/2518/251 E. d. Secure the mounting tray to the instrument panel mounting rails, using four #6-82, 100-degree flathead serews. It is reeommended that rear mounting straps he used fpr added support. Figure 2-4 illustrates typical system installations, e, After the mounting tray has been secured in posi- tion, slide the rear connector assembly into place and secure by tightening four screws. Snap into place the protective shroud provided in the instal- lation kit and tie in place to prevent accidental removal due to shock or vibration. Holes are provided in the shroud and rear plate assembly for this purpose. Caution Do not force turnlock into position. If dif- fiewlty is experienced, remove VHF- 251/2518/251B and check rear connector as- sembly for proper positioning. f. Carefully slide the VEIF-251/2518/251B into the mounting tray. Using your thumbs, apply pressure to the bottom corners of the VHF-251/2518/251E until the connectors are mated, Using a 5/64-inch Allen wrench, secure the VHF-251/2518/251E in place by twisting the turnloek inte position. After tightening, pull frequeney selector knobs to be cer tain the turnlock is in the locked position. ‘The following steps pertain to dual installa- tions only. . Dual installations are secomplished by joining two mounting trays together, using the hardware provided in the installation kit, Connecting screws should be varnished to prevent loosening due to vibration. Included in every installation kit are two straps and two screws. To join tvo mounting rays together, four straps and Tour screws are re- quired. (Refer to figure 2-1.) h, Dual installation cutout dimensions are shown in, figure 22 for both behind-the-panel and fron:- panel mounting installations. 24.2 ANT-251 VIF Communications Antenna 4, Select 2 suitable lovation for antenna mounting us~ ing Uke template shown in the outline and mounting: dimensions drawing, figure 2-3, The ANT-251 may be installed on either the top or bot- tom of the aireraft where ground clearance war- rants Note. Keep comm antennas as far as possible from vhf nav antennas. Isolation between comm and nav antennas should be at least 3) 4B, b. ‘The mounting area selected must provide a stable hase for the antenna as well as clearance for the connector. An unobstructed ares providing line of sight hetween antenna and intended receiving sta- tions is desirable. ©. The surface selected should provide continuous metal contact between the antenna and the air- craft. Adapter plates or shims, when used, must. be metallic and shaped to interface the antenna base to the airerafi contour. Mating surfaces must be clean of paint, primer, dirt, and oxidation. Inner mounting hardware such as doublers and stop nuts also must maintain direct electrical grounding to the airframe. d. After location has been selected, drill the antenna niounting holes and secure in place using four #6 screws, e. If a sealant or aeradynamie smoother is used around the anteana base, ensure application is made after antenna is fastened securely in posi tion, 2.5 CABLING The VHF. namber diagram, signments. 51/2518/251E mating connector part is shown on the outline and mounting igure 25 lists mating connector pin as- During preparation of the interconnect wiring eables, observe the following preesutions: a, Bond and shield all parts of the aircraft electrical system, such as generator and ignition systems. b, Keep the interconnect cables away from eireuits carrying heavy current, pulse transmitting equi ment, and other sources of interference. ¢. Figure 2-5 presents the VHF-251/2518/251E mating connector pin assignments, Refer to that il- lustration and the VHF-251/2515/251E intercon- neet wiring diagrams figure 2-8 or 2-9, when preparing the intereonneet cable. 6. Leave slack in the cable to allow for movement due to vibration ¢. After installation of the cables in the aireraft and before installation of the equipment, a check should be made to ensure that the aircraft power is applied only to the pins specified. Refer to figure 2- ‘or connector pin assignments, f. Remove and install connector contacts in accor- dance with steps g through i. Table 2-1 lists the special tools required to perform the following steps. x During installation of the maging connector, the connecting wire must be crimped in the contact so Revised 27 February 198! installation 523-0766009 Wal (Cont) ¢. Set one transceiver volume control ap- proximately to its midpoint, d. Slowly adjust the other transceiver volume control through its midpoint posi- tion and listen for reduction in the level of the combined audio output. if the transceiver phase shifts are incom- patiblo, the audio signal will be completely cancelled or appreciably reduced asthe audio ontput level of the two transceivers approach equality, If die Lranseeiver phase shifts are compatible, the audio output will be at least as loud as that of a single unit. The preceding test should be performed after any change of vhf communications transceiver or audio equipment. If the attenuation/eancellation problem is detected in an installation consisting solely of Micro Line equipment, remove each transceiver and check the wiring of tran- sformers ALTL and AIT2, This problem in- dicates that a serious error in wiring has been made on one of these two components. Compare the transceiver audio outpat (headphone or speaker) with the rf envelope by aquiek cheek that ensures proper wiring. If the transeeiver is operating properly, the audio output will be in phase with 1. positive portion of the xf envelope; if tas relationship does not exist, a wiring problenw is present. Normally this problem is extremely rare in a. pure Miero Line system; however, extra at- tention should be given in a mixed system checkout, Keep in mind that any equipment interfacing with the transeeiver (audio pan- el, line buffers, another vhf COMM transceiver, or auxiliary amplifiers) may in= fluence the audio output phase and con- tribute to attennation/cancellation. After all cabling has been installed and the equip- ment has been mounted in the aireraft, make the operational check outlined below to ensure correct operation of the equipment in the aireraft. These tests may be made using the aireraft power supply with the engine running or with auxiliary power ap- plied to the aireratt. a. Apply power to the VHF-251/2518/251E by turn- ing on the on/off switch, b. Cheek the squelch disable circuit by palling out the OFF/VOL/TSP control. Noise from the receiver should be applied to the aireraft audio system, €. Select the operating frequeney of a known station in the immediate area. Press the microphone push-to-talk switch and obtain a signal cheek Repeat this procedure with other stations on di ferent frequencies if possible. a. The VHF-251( ) automatically dims the display in low light. The lower limit of the dimming cireuit is set by adjusting a pot (located under the frequency selector knobs) with a screwdriver. This adjust- ment must be done at night or in a completely dark hangar. Adjust the pot for a comfortable fully dimmed display brightness level Warning «djustment of the dimmer control may cause the display to go completely dark at night. Adjusting the pot does not change the display brightness in daylight. All adjust. ments must be made under conditions no brighter than a night-lighted cockpit. 1820) @ TSIM aL0N SNILNON ane79 aueiSLW . gt pe ree | if ! aw fase] teeey | Sere » ¥ia oct" 00" 1] oe Zep SMguOS ™ [oog71] eat Ns SON MO - | | Oe'se 1 vid aaTanog any AGASYO ONILNAQW HLEM Ca1ddNs $i VWNALNY ® “[sannod a7] Sea LHBIam se “(SAHONIT S3LEVITTIW My daw sNoisNana CTS *S3LOW 10V1.d7934 fez-e] ‘ond dA —~ bers egot | bs] 21 7 42a WNNLNY WS Laved ure ips gattaats : anvig wa78nog MHL f2e0"] 1a'a : AiSv9 damtana {| A mun Max. 38 (ASE) 2 (187) WIRE STRIPFING.
