SPOLIARIUM

raymond legaspI

The term Spoliarium refers to the chmber under the Roman Colosseum
where the dead bodies of fallen gladiators are dumped. In order to
commentt on the current spate of killongs in the country, the Artist
parodied the figures with “gummy bear characters”, adding another
layer to the slogan: It’s more fun in the Philippines. The origin of this
painting was by Juan Novicio Luna

“Embodied the essence of our social, moral and political life: humanity in the
severe ordeal, humanity unredeemed, reason, and idealism in open struggle
with prejudice, fanaticism, and injustice.”
I like this painting because the meaning is deep and realistic. The
moment I saw the painting it feels like it calls me to come near with it
and then there at that moment I realize spoliarium isn’t just spoliarium it
was so much more.
