Reflection On the Lecture (2-Feb,2019)

Last week, I learned Action Research Process – The traditional OD approach to change,
“Lewinian Action Research Methods” –The Old Paradigm’s OD Practicing, Action Research and
Single-Double Loop Learning, Planned Change Models–3rd Generation Approach, etc.

From the classroom learning, I have deep understanding on single-double loop learning. Single-
loop learning is to improve the system as it exists. The process would be unfreezing, move and
refreeze which means we move forward but it can happen again. Double-loop learning is more
than just fixing the problem. It further looks the root cause of the problem.

As an OD practitioner, we aren’t a problem solver and we also are not in a position to tell them
how to do in the process. Moreover, it is important not to jump on to conclusions by past
experiences. We rather facilitate the process as a facilitator and direct them toward the goal and
let them generate results by themselves.

In addition, I have new realization on butterfly effect, that is, one thing happen in a certain place
may have effect on other places. For example, Arab Spring, that is, protesting for democracy in
Arab led to spread in other countries as we are in a digitalized world. If we want to make butterfly
effect, we need to make the right condition in the right time.

As an OD student and because of the lecture, I have got a valuable knowledge and realization on
OD practitioner as a facilitator not a problem solver, not to judge by past experiences in similar
situations and direct them toward the designated goal.

I believe that this new knowledge and realization would be useful throughout my degree, in my
future professional and private life.
