LABORATORY DATA SHEET nr.

2
Drawing the surface model
Location of the laboratory: S.C. Navyk S.R.L

1. Scope:

 Observations of the technological process and the product:

The final product of this stage is the surface model, which helps us obtaining
the 3D solid model, which is presented in the next laboratory.

 Involved parties: S.C. Navyk S.R.L, various clients from Netherlands.

2. Objectives:

For obtaining the 3D solid model we need to start with the surface model.
First, we import in Rhino the construction drawings. According to them,
we make surfaces from simple curves.

3. Analysis of observations:

a) Product flow, stage:

After we import in Rhino the construction drawings (which contains

different views of decks or frames) we make a layer for each view, which
helps us keeping the surface model as clean as possible. Then, we start
drawing curves according to the construction drawings. Using commands as
ExtendCurve , SweepRail, EdgeSurface, or Trim, Split, etc., we create the
surfaces we need in order to obtain the surface model.
b) Capabilities,staff,equipment:

 Usually, a project is done by a group of three people: the Project

Leader, which is the person responsible for the project, who usually
talks with the client about revisions and details about the ship, checks
for errors, while working alongside with the Engineers on the project.
The Engineers follow the Project Leader's instructions for creating the
building kit for the ship.

 Each person works on his computer.

c) Applicable technologies:

We will use the following programs:

 Rhinoceros 3D for 3D Surface or Solid Modeling

d) Application of standards (eg.):

All operations are performed in accordance with the rules and standards of
the classification societies.

e) Quality, Inspections:

Depending on the difficulty or the complexity of each task, checks will be

effectuated by the project leader, daily or at the end of each stage.

4. Conclusions

In conclusion, the stage in which is created the surface model is as important

as any other stage, even if it’s not as difficult or complex as the others.
