The story ‘The Bend-Double Beggar’ is about a bent double beggar
named Ganpat. He was a very wise person and always offers
everyone his teachings. There were many rumours that Ganpat was once an actor or a lawyer or a CID officer. One day, Ruskin asked Ganpat to tell his story at the worth of a rupee. Ganpat agreed. He told Ruskin that 20 yrs ago he had a well settled life when one night he was coming back home on his bullock cart, a ghost named Bippin pounced on him who was long ago hanged from the peepul tree by a gang of dacoits. Bippin told Ganpat that he would sleep with him and he shouldn’t tell anyone about his presence. If he agrees, Bippin would make him rich. Ganpat agreed. After some days, Ganpat’s wife called her family due to his strange behaviour. He became exasperated with their questions and spilled the truth. The next time when he crossed the tree, he met Bippin who hit him 3 times on his back until he was bent double. He could never straighten himself up again. From then he wandered from city to city, begging for a living.
As the story ends, Ruskin gave him the rupee but he didn’t believe him and.
