that, the teacher will then proceed on presenting the guide questions that the students
need to answer while reading the excerpt of the novel. The students will be given 10
minutes to read the excerpt and answer the guide questions. After the time limit, the
teacher will ask the students to share their answers for the guide questions.

About the author:

“Victor Hugo is, without doubt, the most famous figure ever to have lived in the
Channel Islands. He is famous worldwide as both a literary and political celebrity and he
has succeeded in the difficult task of being both intellectually respectable and at the
same time immensely popular, especially through two of his major works, Notre Dame
de Paris and Les Miserables, which was completed in Guernsey.”
About the text:
“Les Miserables employs Hugo’s style of imaginative realism, a very detailed and
believed creation of an imagined world, and is set in an artificially created human hell
that emphasizes the three major predicaments of the nineteenth century. Each of the
major characters in the novel symbolizes one of these predicaments: Jean Valjean
represents the degradation of man in the proletariat, Fantine represents the subjugation
of women through hunger, and Cosette represents the atrophy of the child darkness. In
part, the novel’s fame has endured because Hugo successfully created characters that
serve as symbols of larger problems without being flat devices.”

Guide questions:
1. Who are the characters in the excerpt? Describe each.
2. What is the little girl doing in the forest at the time of the night? What
about the man?
3. If you were Cosette, will you also trust Jean Valjean even if you just met
him in the forest?
4. What does Cosette feel towards Jean Valjean?
5. What is the current condition of Cosette in the Thenardier’s inn?
6. What do you think will happen to Cosette and to the man once they reach
the inn?
7. Based on the dialogues of Cosette, how can you describe the treatment of
the Thenardiers to her?

D. Application
The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups. Each group will be asked to
present a 2-3minute role play depicting the events that happened in the excerpt that
they have read. The teacher will give the students 10 minutes to prepare for the role
play and after the time limit, each group will start their presentation.

E. Generalization
The teacher will ask the students to sequence the events that happened in the
excerpt. After that s/he will ask the students to answer the following questions:
“Who is the author of the story?”
“What are the two literary works that made Hugo very famous worldwide?”
“What is so special to the drama, Les Miserables?”
“Who are the characters in the excerpt?”
“Why is Cosette in the middle of the forest during the late hours of the night?”
“If you were Cosette, will you easily put your trust to a man you met in the middle
of a forest?”
“If you will have a chance to talk to Cosette, what would you tell her or ask her?”

IV. Evaluation
The students will be grouped into five groups and they will choose one
representative to present their output.
Instructions: Create a comic strip to show the events that transpired in the
excerpt. Your comic strip must have:
 A panel title labeled with the main idea of the poem;

 Detailed descriptions and/or dialogue to illustrate the idea of each frame.

V. ASSIGNMENT
The teacher will ask the student to secure a copy of Les Miserables. The
students will need to invite their parents to watch it with them. After watching the movie,
the students must interview their family members using the questions below. The
answers that they will gather will be written in the table provided.

1. What is the best part of the movie for you?

2. Who is your favorite character in the movie? Why?

3. What feelings do you share with any character in the movie?

4. If you have a chance to ask a character from the movie, who would it be and
