Throughout the book, The Hunger Games, there is constantly a presence of reality
vs. appearance in media. Especially when it is time for interviews Peeta and Katniss
demonstrate another side of themselves. Specifically, in these chapters, Peeta and Katniss
show how being in the public eye changes them and in a way makes them both vulnerable.
During the interview with Caesar, he confesses his love for Katniss. While in the public eye
Katniss´ ¨eyes flicker up to the screen long enough to see that the blush on my cheeks is
unmistakable¨(133). Although it may seem as if she feels shy and flirty, in reality, she is
raging mad. Later on, when Peeta and Katniss go backstage Katniss ¨slams my palms into
his chest. He loses his balance and crashes into an ugly urn filled with fake flowers¨ (134).
This demonstrates how Katniss wears a mask and tries to be vulnerable in public as an
advantage to get sponsors and overall get the audience to like her. Along with this, Peeta
shows his true identity to the crowd by portraying the way he feels about Katniss. Although
Katniss is his enemy and even confessing his love is risky, he tries to be true to himself
every step of the way. Peeta also shows that he stays true to what he says when Katniss
¨gets a glimpse of Peeta¨(161) with the Careers, which seems as if he joined the alliance to
get a better chance of beating Katniss. Although it may seem as if he were betraying her, he
does this to portray that he wants to help Katniss by protecting her from others killing her
when she is in desperate need of help. To conclude, Katniss demonstrates how she acts
differently when in the public eye and reveals her true self backstage. Meanwhile, Peeta
stays true to his identity no matter how much Katniss is being an imposture on mass
media.
