PASSENGERS
PASSANGERS
INITIALLY
Amid tensions heightened by the US killing of top Iranian general Qasem
Soleimani on 3 January, Iran initially said it would not hand over the recovered
black box flight recorders to Boeing, the plane's manufacturer, or to the US.

However, an Iranian official later told Reuters the US had been formally invited
to take part in the investigation, and the US National Transportation Safety
Board (NTSB) confirmed it had assigned an investigator.

Boeing said it would support the NTSB in the inquiry, and the Transportation
Safety Board of Canada said it had also been invited to the accident site by
Tehran.
WHAT IS BLACK BOX?
BLACK BOX
Essentially, a black box flight recorder is heavily
protected recording device, similar to a hard disk
or a memory card. The black box records all
relevant flight data, in addition to conversations in
the cockpit. Previously, this data had to be
recorded on two different devices. But today
there are also units that can do both. According
to regulations, however, every airplane must have
two of these devices on board.
CAUSE OF THE CRASH THEORY
The National Security and Defense
Council of Ukraine announced that it is
examining possible causes, "including an anti-
aircraft missile strike, a mid-air collision, an
engine explosion or an explosion inside the
plane carried out by a terrorist"; Ukrainian
experts will look for fragments of a Russian-
made Tor surface-to-air missile at the site
of the crash
