University in the U.S. Inquiry is all about developing crucial learning skills and is

Science This Inquiry course asks students to take fundamental concepts of coding

Science The world of sport is changing. No longer are athletes and coaches

STNRCK One Strange Rock: Animation


Art Based on the Netflix series called One Strange rock hosted by Will Smith
Technology which takes a very unique look at Planet Earth. This course will analyse the
Design Thinking content of the series and use it as a basis for an art project and then move
FULL YEAR into investigating the topic through animation.

SUSENV Making a Sustainable Environment Here


English In this inquiry students will be introduced to the concept of sustainability.

SPACE Survival in Space


Social Science How do astronauts survive in the harsh conditions of the vacuum of Outer
Technology Space. In a place where there is no water or oxygen, what methods are
Design Thinking used to meet the needs of the astronauts? This is beginning Science with a
Year 10 Language Social Science perspective. We will look back through time to the earliest
Students only moments of the galaxy with an introduction into the optics of the James
Webb Telescope as well as survey of the origin of the planets and the solar
system, with emphasis on recent space exploration. Ultimately you will be
trying to solve some of the problems that astronauts face, such as recycling
water and maintaining a healthy body in zero gravity, and come up with
solutions to help them survive.

Science We will investigate the geologic processes that are continually shaping our

The Active Movement programme supports students to engage in a wide range of

the skills and knowledge for lifelong participation. The course will include

Course is available This is an introduction to wood carving- whakairo. Learn basic skills of
chisel and mallet work, properties of wood and safety aspects needed to

and then focus on Polynesia and our Maori carvers. You will work on
different briefs which interest you, and create outcomes accordingly.

CELBRTE Celebration
Course is available Lantern festival, Holi festival of colour, Dia De Los Mertos, La Tomatina,
Matariki, Carnival and so many more. Learn about celebrations from
Full Year around the world - costumes, food, art and the reason for the season.
This is a full year course.
COACH Coaching
Course is available In COACHING, students will get the opportunity to learn about the
Athlete Centred Coaching paradigm. They will be challenged to think in
the eyes of a coach, not an athlete. This will involve learning the art of
communication, demonstrating responsibility and developing the tool of
empowerment. The A.C.C approach will require them to be innovative
Full Year and creative, challenging them to deliver coaching lessons outside of
their sporting norm.
Students wishing to do this will be required to do it all year as the aim is to
get you accredited in your chosen sports realm

COBOTS Coding and Robotics


Course is available This course is designed to teach the basics of Robotics and Programming.
Each module will look at how technology can help with real world issues.
Module Students will design, build and program their robots to be fit for purpose. An

DIRTY Dirty But Clean


Course is available Introduction to soap making. Perfect as gifts or to sell at the
markets! Learn basic skills around soap production and bath fizzers. You
will be introduced to the different types of soap making and then use a

and healing balm will be taught as well.

EXPLRE Explore the World


Course is available People love to travel: it helps open your mind. You come to realize that
there's no one way to live life. Learning about other places will show you
that your world view isn't the same as everyone else's. ... By being exposed

Course is The Hatrix Big Band is an integral part of Spotswood Colleges identity. Over
the years, the band has performed and competed around New Zealand and
Australia. Performing music in a Big Band with over 18 members is an

INJUST Injustice and Human Rights


Course is available In this 8-week module students will learn about some famous cases of
people who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes they did not
commit. There will be a focus on historical racism within the justice

system, particularly in the USA. We will look at the reasons why some
groups in society are more vulnerable to be convicted of crime.

KIND Kind

In this 8 week module students will focus on leading a project for charity
and / or random acts of kindness for our whanau, school or wider

community, especially as the festive season approaches.

KPAHKA Kapa Haka Performance


Course is available We want our students to develop their confidence and mana when
they are representing the school in kapa Haka performances. We plan
to to perform in school events, assemblies, and local kaupapa, such as
Puanga. Students will commit to being part of kapa haka for all of 2020.
Module This is a full year course, and we want to encourage students to be part

Course is available Spend a great one hour a week reading your favourite novels and short

MEDTAT Meditation and Mindfulness

With mindfulness meditation, you train in remaining aware of the present
moment in a non-judgmental manner.

It has been proven that the practice of meditation, carried out on a regular
Module basis, will mitigate the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Full Year Come prepared to sit still, relax and tune out. Meditation takes practice and
commitment. For full effectiveness there needs to be a peaceful and calm
environment; quietening of the mind is a vital component.

MKI2TKI Mickey is out Tu Meke is in!


Course is available Mickey is out Tu Meke is in! You will be widening your skills and depth
of knowledge in Te Ao Maori. You will learn the practical and symbolic
skills of raranga / weaving, whakairo / carving, kowhaiwhai / design and
rongoa / medicine. By exploring contemporary artists, you will

MLTISPT Multisport
Course is available This module has been developed for individuals to push the boundaries of
their physical ability through Multisport. Learning in and through
Multisport has many benefits and of course presents many challenges. If
you are a beginner with little experience or someone that has participated

Course is available Are you a keen adventurer? Do you have a good sense of direction? Enjoy

answers, Rogaine is the programme for you! Each week you will have the
opportunity to master a new Rogaine course, either in the school grounds

transferable across a variety of industries and careers. It is a great

communities.
Students will need to commit to the full year course being run in
conjunction with Coastguard Boating Education. Students will have

TDYFRI From Litter to Beauty


Course is available We are going to be tidying up our immediate environment by picking up
rubbish in and around our school grounds and classrooms. We will
progress to planting trees beyond the gully at Spotswood to improve
Module our environment. We will investigate further the life cycle and
Semester characteristics of the trees, creating posters and mini projects. Further
Full Year into the year we may venture out to the beaches and tidy them up too.

Course is available In this Community Connect you will work towards hosting a “Walk In
Wardrobe” event for our immediate and wider community. This will

Semester That’s when the FUN begins! You will work towards filtering through the
Full Year clothing and racking it up, before hosting a “gold coin” event where
people can buy pre-loved clothing to RE-LOVE in a new home.
M2T Mickey to Tiki
Course is available Mickey is out Tu Meke is in! You will be widening your skills and depth
of knowledge in Te Ao Maori. You will learn the practical and symbolic
skills of raranga / weaving, whakairo/ carving, kowhaiwhai / design and
rongoa / medicine. Guest artists will take workshops and you will then
use their practice as inspiration for your own work. Tiki will connect to
Semester 2 only our tupuna and whenua, to guard these fiercely!
This programme will benefit all students but also enrich students in the
Te Ao Maori programme and Maori Art and Design courses. Massey
University will work in partnership to provide students with future
career pathways in Maori visual art / design and curation.

Friday afternoons in Te Waka Manaaki are times for us to chill out,

Students will use their expertise as learners to create fun and engaging

activities for younger students. Students will get to do it all - learn and

FOOD Food for Thought


In this course students will research food poverty in the region. A lot of
students do not come to school with lunch. This course aims to get
students to connect with local businesses to source donations in the aim
of providing a local primary or Intermediate school with lunch for a day.
