General Methodology to Predict Fatigue Crack Growth

1. Analytical Approach
By second stage of fracture mechanics fatigue crack propagation behavior denoted as Paris’s
low. And the equation are list below:
𝑑𝑎
= 𝐶∆𝑘 𝑚
𝑑𝑁
𝐾 = 𝜎𝑌√𝜋𝑎
𝑎𝑓
𝑑𝑎
𝑁𝑓 = ∫
𝑎0 𝐶∆𝐾 𝑚
where a is the crack size
C is the constant of fatigue
m is exponent of fatigue
K is stress intensity factor
Y is geometry factor
N is cycle of loading
𝜎 is stress
 For Various Amplitude
For this condition, Current stress can not use to predict crack growth. History and Residual
stress are considered. Increment of crack are calculated step by step.
2. Experiment Approach
 Mechanical Properties: Obtaining from conduct tensile experiment by servo hydraulic.
 Fatigue testing:
The are three of different mode of fatigue of loading, Mode l (tension), Mode ll (sliding)
and Mode lll (tearing). it depends on real application of loading. For Mode l use compact tension
specimen for testing to get constant C and exponent m of fatigue. Compact tension sliding is used
for Mix Mode loading. Crack size rate versus stress data is recorded by Microscope to photography
of the fracture
3. Finite Element Analysis Approach
Finite Element Analysis is used to simulation and comparing with experiment or analytical
approach. Anysys and Abaqus were common used to simulation for structure design. To gain
accurate results, It depends on boundary condition, meshing, and actual mechanical properties.
