Sandvik
Duplex Stainless Steels
SAF 2507
Sandvik SAF 2507 is a high-alloy super
duplex stainless steel for service under
extremely corrosive conditions. It is de-
veloped mainly for chloride containing
environments like seawater and, there-
fore, it contains high amounts of chro-
mium, molybdenum and nitrogen.
SAF 2205
Sandvik SAF 2205 is a medium-alloy
duplex stainless steel with high corrosion
resistance. This steel is the most widely
used ofthe three. Continual development
work formany yearshas lead to increased
nitrogen and molybdenum contents, thus
further improving the weldability and
corrosion resistance,

SAF 2304
Sandvik SAF 2304 isa low-alloy duplex
stainless steel. It contains no molybde-
‘num and has lower nickel content than
the other two. It is developed as a high-
strength and low-cost altemative to the
standard austenitic grades 304L and
3I6L.

MICROSTRUCTURE
A duplex stainless steel has a two-phase structure. Figure 1
shows the microstructure where the austenite islands (light) are
embedded in a ferrite matrix (dark). The ferrite/austenite ratio
is approximately 50/50.
